The S&W family keeps growing. Traded into this clean 36 no dash today. Stocks are numbered to the gun. Couldn’t resist the condition and flat latch. We’re up to 1 J frame, 2 Ks, 1 L, and 2 Ns, with no end in sight! Funny part is, when I started buying guns about 12 years ago, I had ZERO interest in revolvers. Now I’m getting dangerously close to having more wheel guns than pistols. Never thought I’d see that happen, but tastes evolve over time I guess. Smith & Wesson revolvers are just scratching that itch at this point in my life. We’ll see what’s next!

Pictured in the family photo: 36 no dash, 65-5 3”, 19-4 4”, 686-6 6”, 27-2 6”, 29-2 6.5”

Are the old 36s rated for +P rounds? I don’t plan on a steady diet of these, if ever, but I have a few boxes of Hornady critical defense +Ps, didn’t know if I should be afraid to load these if I ever carry the 36.

Of course I can always just buy some standard pressure defense rounds too. Was just curious. Thanks!

No they are not. You can probably load them strictly for defensive carry, but I wouldn't shoot them much, if at all. The revolver probably won;t blow up but you'll beat it to hell in short order.

Considering how good modern non +P loadings are there's really not much point in seeing if you can beat yourself and your gun up.

Anyway, back to the OP that's a great-looking Model 36. A bunch of us have bought one recently so you're part of a very happy club. And yes, like you I went from owning virtually no revolvers to owning several in just the space of a few years. They're very addictive.

The best carry load is a hardcast 158 swc at standard pressure. They hit point of aim and have penetration to reach vitals in the short barrel of a snubnose. All the flash and boom of +P burns out side the barrel adding no power and fly weight lite bullets hit real low and offer no penetration to reach the vitals.

Thx for the tips. I was actually at a LGS today and picked up a box of Hornady standard pressure. I seriously doubt I’ll ever carry this, but never say never. Pry won’t see much range time either, honestly. It was just too cool to pass up.

I’ve got a new 642 that I can carry and that’ll eat the +Ps I have on hand if needed.
