First post on the forum, any information would be appreciated. Wanting to know if i have something rare or just a plain revolver. So i purchased a new smith and wesson 686 plus deluxe 6 inch 7 shot stainless revolver about 6 years ago or so. When I received it I was thrilled, great trigger and very smooth, until I went to shoot it... only 6 rounds went in. Called Smith and they said must have been a mistake and we can rework it at no cost. I didn't opt for that. My question is how rare is a smith and wesson 686 plus deluxe 6 inch stainless that is chambered for 6 but supposed to be the 7 shot model? Haven't seen one like it. All the ones I see are 7 shot models.

Looks like S&W simply made a mistake, which isn't that rare these days. Line worker grabbed a 6-shot cylinder instead of a 7, and QC didn't catch it; my guess is it's that simple.

I'd take Smith up on that offer to make it right, as the plus (7-shot) models cost more. You didn't get what you paid for.

I think I'd leave it alone. Why make it into something everyone else has?

You want a 7 shooter? Perfect excuse to buy another gun!

*About a month ago, I bought a 686 Plus, 3 inch. After about a bazillion dry fires, a new trigger return spring, some lube and a plug, it's fantastic! Very accurate. And it goes bang 7 times.

Not rare, they just shipped you a 6-shot 686 instead of the 7-shot 686+ The 686 as a general rule is one of the more common revolvers out there, as with most things there are exceptions, but sadly this is not one of them. If you want the 7-shot 686+ simply send it back and they will hopefully get it right for you. If you are more of a traditionalist like myself, there is something special about a six-shooter and I have never once felt like my 6-shot 686-3 was a liability.
