I've been reloading since 1980 but this is my first experience with the Jet, here is the question:
On the box of factory ammo I have 'Remington 40g soft points' the AOL is 1.640", the Sierra 40g I am using, even at an OAL of 1.635 still do not have a 1 caliber seating depth in the case, also the factory rounds have a crimp groove, the Sierra's do not, nor do the Hornady bullets. Hornady's are .222 and Sierra's are .223. Does this round not require a 1 caliber depth to seat as is the SOP with rifle loads? Also is it neccesary to crimp this bullet to avoid pull out?
I may be comparing apples to oranges, pistol vs. rifle rules but want to be sure. If I I use the crimp shoulder in the die I'm afraid I'll collapse the shoulder, I don't think it would be possible to use my .223 taper crimp die as the case would not fit into it.
What are your thoughts on this?

The one caliber seating depth is only a rule of thumb. A 0.005" difference in OAL is not gonna hurt anything.

As for crimping, I don't believe it i needed in this caliber, as recoil is fairly light.

What you do want is a tight bullet-to-case assembly, and you get this by selecting the correct diameter bullet and case neck expanding plug to get it. You want sufficient bullet pull to give good powder combustion and resist bullet movement during recoil. Try to get an expander plug that is 0.001" smaller than the diameter bullets you use. You can polish or sand off an existing expander plug held in a drill motor if it is too large.

Thanks John, I did check the expander and it is correct, I neck sized, then expanded, deburred the mouths and insides of primer pocket hole. I seated deeper for a few rounds to avoid the 'ring' of the base of the bullet in the case neck, it just looked wrong.
I'm using 12.5g of 4227 with a CCI small pistol magnum primer, hoping this does good.
Gun is a 1961 4 screw near NIB, it's been fired so I'm looking forward to wringing this one out, it is one of the grail guns I've always wanted.
I'm going to post pics later on the forum, look for them.

I think what I'm going to do, since this is my first run and I need to crono and test anyway, is to seat 10 rnds @ 1.600, then go up around .008 from there and compare the results in accuracy and velocity.
That's half the fun anyway of reloading is the experimenting aspect.
I'll shoot next weekend and post results. I would like to find the info mentioned previously tho', thanks.

make sure all the screws are tight as they will loosen even though there is almost no recoil. have shot and loaded for these since 74 and would offer help if you would like. email is in profile. have shot literally thousands through these guns.
