Advice on a 581

Found a nice 581 at a LGS and could probably get it for less then $425. I would rate it at 90% with pacmyer grip.
Does this sound reasonable?

I worked out a trade with another Forum member for a 586. I basicly have $450 into it. I feel good about it. Mine had the original target grips on it, and less than 50 rounds. A much better shooter than I am!
To answer your actual question, I would offer less, but would pay that price if I had to, because I would want it. The 586 is my 1st L Frame, might get a 686 too! Good Luck! Let us know how you make out! Bob

A lot of guys like guns with fixed sights -- nothing to mess with or get banged askew. I'd pay $425 in a heartbeat. I assume it's a 4".

Go for it! I have 2 581's and I love them both. 581's are MUCH less common than 586's, so odds are you won't see another for that price.

I had a 581 many years ago when they first came out. I now have the 681 which is the same gun just in stainless steel. I would pay that price in a heart beat. As ASHLANDER said a lot of guys love fixed sights...and that would be me included! All my guns have fixed sights. So go get that 581, it is a good price!

yeah, while not a steal, it's a good price for a great gun. I too have a 681, and love it. go get that 581!

What a great looking gun you have there. I really like the fixed sight Smiths, lean and mean, no clutter. :)

The 581 and 681 were aimed squarely at the LEO market, but many agencies found them too heavy and went with K-frame .357's instead. So, not nearly as many were made as the 586 and 686 model.

If I saw a decent 581 for that price, I would gladly add a 3rd to my collection!

Most of them will have holster wear since few "civilians" bought 581's and the majority of them were LEO guns. One of mine was a private purchase gun that was carried by a Memphis, TN police officer.

Picked it up today

It's pretty clean. Need to replace the hogue grips.
