Advice on firing pin and bushing replacement on model 640?

I remember seeing Pics. on here of someone changing out the firing pin on a 940, at one time, but my search came up empty.
Any advice and pictures would sure help. Thanks in advance!
P.S. , I have already tried removing the firing pin bushing pin and tried to tap the whole assy out at the firing pin end , but the bushing will not budge. Do I really have to lay into it?

I think Headknocker had some nice pics of this. I assume your gun has the bushing cross pin just below the rear sight that you can drift out without removing the sideplate. You use a punch/drift and (small) hammer and hit the firing pin just like the hammer would to push out the firing pin and bushing toward the barrel.

Yes, I did that, but nothing budged.......

Remove the pin, then dryfire it some. It will move on it's own.

Tried that first... Didnt work, then beat on it from the back firing pin side with a brass punch... still nothing...

I've lost the pics & searched the internet for them without success.. That Computer Crashed & was Re-Formated..
I did dry fire & the bushing came part of the way out till the hammer coudn't touch the firing pin anymore..
Then I removed the backside part of the broken pin & made an extention from broken drill bit about a 1/4" longer than the piece I removed out the back side.. Then with several more dry fires the bushing came out..
I made a piece up to hammer the bushing back in after I replaced the Firing Pin & Spring with the new ones S&W sent me, I reused the old bushing because it was a few thousanths taller than the new one plus I didn't have a drill press to drill the new bushing, I made sure I started it straight so the retaining pins hole would match up with the hole in the frame..
I used brass punches on the retaining pin so as not to damage anything but used the new pin as S&W sent me everything to do the job..
I still have the new bushing & old cross pin in my stash..
Also I did find a pic of the broken firing pin..
Note how it differs from the newer style that is behind it..
You can see how I was able to get the back half out threw the rear & make an extention to dry fire the bushing the rest of the way out.. You can't get to it on the Centennials with a punch etc
I tried that by bending a punch without success..

Also AllGlock if you have a reduced power hammer spring in that J Frame put the factory one back in as it has more tention & will drive the bushing out better..

If you can't move it by dryfiring it or a punch can't get behind it, you might have to jack it out.

Find a screw that will fit inside the bushing, with the firing pin removed.
Find a 1/4 drive socket that will fit over the breach face.
Place the screw inside the bushing, with the socket placed on the breach face. Add a washer and a nut to the screw. Tighten the screw while holding the socket in place and the bushing will be pulled out of the frame.

Unfortionatly on that type of setup, If It's the same as my 940, The firing pin can't be removed threw the rear, I was able to remove the rear broken off section of the pin threw the rear but it still left a solid piece that was inside the return spring..
I measured it's outside diameter & cut a broken drill rod down that was 1/4" longer than the piece I removed, Then I put it in place of the rear section of the firing pin & reassembled the hammer, strut & mainspring & dry fired while holding my fingers on the hammer, rebound & triggers sides so they wouldn't walk off thier pins..
Also I put a "Full Power" mainspring in as the reduced power Wolff Spring didn't have the inertia to drive the bushing out..
Here's another picture I found of the Broken Firing Pin showing the rear section that I was able to remove out the back & the remaining part that came out the front with the bushing & spring..
It worked for me..

Join the club 500 Magnum Nut.. I'm Lucky to remeber any of this stuff, & only do because I took the pics..
I will have to say that the "Newer" MIM Floating Firing Pins are the easiest to remove & replace, as they come out threw the rear by simply pulling the retaining pin after sideplate removal..
I hope allglock is able to get His 640s FP out..
Looked in my stash & couldn't find the piece of drill rod that I used, I thought I put it away with the rest of those parts.
I'd bet S&W does it the same exact way..
You couldn't even use a slide hammer on the bushing as the front half of the FP is in the way of threading it into the bushing, Then it would have to be small enough to pass threw the barrel & long enough to put the weight & handle on it..
This sound like a "ShooBoy" Custom Tool to me.. Hmmmm
The bushing instalation drift was a one time only tool for me & used the brass end of my "Elf Hammer" seen above.
I still have it & haven't used it since..

No, I didnt try any further. I was going to change the bushing out , because the firing pin has a little movement when sticking all the way through.... But I guess it is OK , and I will live with it. I have another 640 which the firing pin fit is tight in the hole.

I don't think you really want to replace the bushing yourself. The bushing is drilled in place and unless you have the proper fixture you're not going to be able to drill the new bushing without the bit walking and making a mess of things.

You know what's funny is that the 940 I have that "HAD" the broken firing pin didn't show any signs of the FP being a problem..
When I had the side plate off cleaning it, I dry fired it a few times with all the parts held tightly inward & could see the back half of the FP all but fall out when Dry Firing, When I pointed the gun at the ceiling the back half just dropped out..
It probobly could have stayed like that indefinately untill it would have just locked up or quit wolking completely..
On these floating style pins I check them now when I've got them apart, Just pull on the back half with a pair of hemostats or tweezers with the hammer removed..
Good Luck allglock, If you already have the FP Bushings retaining pin out & have the parts, I'd just make sure the pin is still in one peice..
