I just recieved my 940 cylinder today. (The last one they had.) I placed it in my 649-1. It has no more movement than the .38 cylinder and locks up perfect in single and double action. I used some fired 9mm brass to watch if the hammer made contact and it did. It seems like a drop in fit. Is there anything else I need to do before test firing?
Thanks for your help.

I dont have a gauge. I just compared it with my other j-frame and it appears to be the same. Is that good enough?

Thanks. I will try it tomorrow and post the results.

I put all types of rounds through it. Remington fmj and jhp and plus p. I even put some gold-dot plus p. All was great. The only sticky extractions were from from some georgia arms gold dots. Accuracy was good with head shots on B-27 targets at twenty yards. Most all the different bullet weights printing right were the sights are. Thanks to all the people who helped me back in November on the 640 to 940 thread. My 649-2 will stay in the 9mm form. Now where can I get the moon clips??

Smith & Wesson should still have moon clips for sale for the 940. If not drop me a PM and I can set you up. If you want you can buy a chamber hone from Brownells and you will be able to shoot any 9mm in it with no extraction troubles

one of our forum members Headknocker
seems to be the resident "expert" on 9mm conversions

he also has a set of the Chamber Hones that he lends out to forum members

Expert ???? I doubt that?? I fitted a 940-1 cylinder to my 642 & also have a 940 No dash..
I do have a set of the Brownells Cylinder Hones in the 9mm/38/357.. There out now & should return very soon..
Some brass cases will stick some others won't, I always thought it was the brass & it's hardness that allow it to expand more in the chamber & if the cylinder has reamer marks inside the brass expands into the marks & locks the brass in, also the 9mm para cartridge is slightly tapered & this has alot to do with cartridge setback & gas/carbon getting past the case when fired..

I see you said you got the last one they had, Who did you get it from & was it a 940 or 940-1 cylinder?? Does the extractor have two pins or the newer type??
You got lucky that the cylinder fit without any fitting but Pred here at the forum had the same thing happen with his.. Congrats!!

Here's a few places that have the Moon Clips as well you can order them from Smith & Wesson directly..
TK Seems "Very Proud" of their moon clips there High Dollar, I have some of their clips from back when they weren't as expensive & they used to be .040" thick & are now .035"..
Also the Ruger SP101 9mm moons can also work but others have said they rub the cylinder stop on the S&W, TK offers some custom moons but there $69.95 for 10.. Oh My!! That's $7ea?????

I buy the moonclips for my rechambered 360J direct from S&W. They're something like $1.32 each and I haven't had a bit trouble with them. I've used them with 9mm +P+, .38 Super, and 9x23 Winchester.

The Ranch Products moon clips seem to fit the cases a little loose, but have never had any fall out. From Midway they are reasonable. I assume Dillon also has them.

All the moon clips seem to be loose on the 9mm cases??
I still can't figure out why??
Ranch products makes the moon clips & may be the maker for the other suppliers?? I met the owner at a gunshow a couple of times..
Note how these TK Moons for a Ruger SP101 9mm have the slot cut in them to tention the rounds.
These are the ones that I said were $7ea..Also there stainless instead of carbon steel..

I am also considering a 9mm conversion. With the obvious interest surprised S&W doesn't re-release a 9 wheel gun.

Charter Arms was supposed to be releasing a 9, 40, and 45 wheel gun in January. They even had pics on their site but nothing since that.

Thanks for the hook up on the moonclips. I will order some later this week.
