Age of Model 41

My uncle just purchased a S&W Model 41. He was curious about it's age. It has a cardboard box and the cleaning kit (unopened) It appears to be an old one. The serial number is A644xxx. Any help would be appreciated.

That would date to 1980.

rimfirecentral.com and go to the S&W forum. They have ALL the 41 dates by SN#.

The only problem with Supica's book and any other reference book is that S&W would manufacture and stamp but not necessarily assemble some guns until later on. So one can have a early serial number but the gun may well have been assembled and sold much later on. All the semi-auto serial numbers were mixed together. The only real way to know is to contact S&W and pay for a Jenks letter.
