Surprisingly, these are not that unusual in that condition. All they are good for is as conversation pieces.

This gun has several good parts that can be great donor items. The side plate, the screws and best of all the back strap, which can be cut out and welded into an undamaged Aircrewman that has had the back strap stamping ground off. Some interior parts may also be good, such as the main spring, etc. I've managed to restore several of these guns over the years, using parts from demilled donors. Ed. (PS: If you are an FFL holder, possession of this gun can be illegal unless you have entered it in your bound book and can get you a ding from the BATF if you are audited. Granted, it's stretching the point, but there's no exemption in the BATF thinking for condition of a gun. )

The story I heard was they could not handle the pressure in the 38 ammo so the Air Force tried to lighten the loads did not work either. They were then cut up as this one was most likely destroyed with a torch. I also heard that only 8 of them were never cut up. Just stories I may be wrong.

I have a friend who has one of these he was given as a kid by an uncle. The story was his uncle bought it out of a barrel of them for $5.00. The condition is better then this example shown here.
