Alaskans enjoying a healthy snack

Just got back from Kenai area. We were halibut fishing. Saw 6 moose but no bears, although tracks outside the cabin/shack. Couple next to us saw one while fly fishing.

On Sunday evening at about 7 PM local there were at least 6-10 Salmon jumping the falls at one time that pace lasted nearly an hour. I was surprised there were more bears there last week with many less fish.

THAT is one of the best cams I've seen. Think I'll have some Salmon and take a nap. Thank you!

The former Mrs. BUFF and I took a commercial bear watching trip a few years ago up there. From Homer they flew is out to Katmai National Park in a DeHavilland Beaver on floats. Then we off-loaded onto a converted fishing trawler they owned anchored in a place called Geographic Bay. Then a ride to shore in an aluminum skiff to where a big stream from a glacier ran into the ocean. Spent the day wandering around about 25 brown bears fishing. They don't associate humans with food as nobody is allowed to take food ashore and the bears pretty much ignore you, they are there to fish. One of the best days of my life.

The bears don't eat the whole salmon, they just squeeze the eggs out of the females and rip the skin off and eat that. It's the fattiest part of the fish. The seagulls have a field day feasting on the remains.

You have to draw out on a raffle to go to Brooks Falls. Pretty limited chance of getting in. The camera is a tremendous idea.

Some of the bears are much better at catching fish than others....interesting to watch their different techniques. :)

"Big Daddy" with his back to the rock face seems to have the best system. Traps 'em and rips 'em, slow and methodical. Yesterday they had a feed with the park rangers and they said he gets 40 fish a day. Joe

He's definitely the largest one out there and commands what looks to be the best location......I guess none of the others want to challenge him for his fishing spot. :D
