GRIFFIN, Ga. --
An Atlanta business owner with several offices in Georgia is now requiring all of his employees to get a concealed carry license and be armed.

Business owner Lance Toland said after hearing about recent home invasions and violent crime in the metro Atlanta area, he came up with the new office mandate.

"They all had their conceal carry permit within three to four weeks of me announcing that this was something you had to do," he said. "With the presentation of their license, they all got a 410 Judge Pistol."

The rest of the story is here:

Could I sell the Judge and get me a gun I don't need a tow truck to pull the trigger? I seriously doubt most women could pull that Judge trigger. I thought the gun had a safety on when I tried shooting one.

Yeah, even I would not want a shotgun pistol. These ladies are gonna have dinged foreheads.

No. Bad idea.

Encourage, yes. Support, subsidize, maybe offer to pay for training, ammo, range membership, or even an appropriate gun if your employees agree to carry at work, absolutely.

But a mandate? No. Having somebody who may not be comfortable with a firearm carry a gun just because she wants to keep her job is a lousy idea.

The guy wants to make a point. The fact that he's passing out a boy's toy like the Judge instead of letting everyone choose a decent self-defense handgun they are most comfortable with confirms that.

Not well advised. Aviation insurance offices? Allowing employees to carry is one thing. Requiring that they be armed is another. This should be an individual's decision alone unless they signed up for a security, military or LE position.

There are other ways he could have made the offices and parking areas more secure for his employees without requiring that a firearm be a part of their lives.

For those employees who want to make that decision on their own, there are other insurance offices to work in, I am sure. We all know that the Judge (or Governor) is not the best choice for a CCW weapon. Of course, I didn't read that he is requiring they carry the Judge, but he did mention that everybody kept them in their desk or on their person at the office. It's likely that there are several other varieties of pistol around. I don't know about Georgia's CCW laws, but some states make you have a CCW permit to also open carry.

There are other jobs where you sometimes have to get a concealed carry permit, pharmaceutical sales sometimes, ATM repair, what not. Technically all able bodied males, and an argument could be made that now all abled body women, are in the unorganized militia and subject to call up in national emergency anyway as the price of citizenship.

I suspect some legal ignorance. In SC, you don't need a permit to carry concealed on your own property, or on your employer's property with his permission. I imagine it's the same in Georgia.

And Judges®?

Perhaps what is really going on is . . . marketing.

Right on! If they don't like the idea of carrying, they can find a different place to work. It's usually the opposite - those who want to carry, can't - and there aren't as many options out there for places to go when you have to make the decision. Plus, just because he gave them the Judge doesn't mean they have to carry it. He said once they got their CCW he presented them with a Judge. Some chose to carry it or leave it in their desk. I'd take it home, as the gift it was presented as, and carry something more suitable for me. If I was seeking services that his company provided, he would be my first stop.

There's a lot the article doesn't say .. how many are employed .. and if the women were receptive of the idea ..

over all might be a good idea and even though it said it was a mandate doesn't mean someone not wanting to could be excused from it ..

too many unknowns to judge what he is doing ..

YEAH, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

And I thought this was still the USA where a person had a choice. I hope this braniac enjoys lawsuits. Allow/encourage/support CC, by all means. Mandatory, not in my USA. Any publicity is good publicity?

Well, Tim, I guess you learned not to put that sort of article on such a conservative forum.

Try to show something positive and get a flame job. Lighten up guys, the boss is only trying to help. He apparently got no protests from his people.

Mods if this is too much, delete it.

This is not about religion, race, ethnic origin, etc ...
This is just another Specific Skill REQUIRED in that Workplace.

Consider the Concealed Carry License as a Diploma for passing the skills exam.

"Everybody has one of these in their drawer or on their person. I would not want to come into one of my facilities,"
Toland said. "It's a 5 shot 410, just like a shotgun and you call it hand cannon."

I did not read anything about requiring the employees to actually shoot anyone.

Announcing to the press that the employees are trained and armed will likely put his business on the "Places to Avoid" by certain undesirable members of society.

His plan is a one time cost - or he could keep paying for feeding and vet care of a Guard DOG ...

I'm all for concealed carry and self-defense. I've carried every day for over eighteen years, since very soon after it became legal in Kentucky. I'm for women carrying, as well as men. But this is wrong.

The decision to carry a gun is, and should be, a very personal one. It's a huge responsibility. I don't want to be around someone who doesn't want that responsibility but is forced to be armed in order to stay employed.

As for saying. "There are other places to work," that presumes an awful lot, including the question of possibly having to change jobs and take a pay cut, in a tight economy with some kinds of jobs not all that plentiful. It presumes that none of the employees, due to age or physical problems, would have trouble getting hired elsewhere, especially with benefits. It disregards seniority.

I didn't like not being allowed to carry, on pain of termination, at my last two jobs; but I needed those jobs, and positions for people my age and with my physical limitations weren't plentiful. I stayed and didn't carry a gun at work

People should have a choice about something so important.
