In response to my previous posting regarding mini red dot sight recommendations, some suggested using an Allchin Mount on my Model 586. I did read a lot of the reviews on their website. Most were very positive. However, several verified buyers expressed the same recurring, negative comment about them.

All of the following pertain to the 2 included alignment (locating) pins. They:

1.) Are not integral with the mount itself.

2.) Are separate, unattached parts.

3.) Are made of plastic and not aluminum.

4.) Are too small in diameter, so as to allow an excessive amount of play to be present between the pins, the holes in the mount and the holes in the sight body.

5.) Are too small in size to actually locate the sight properly, thus serving no real purpose.

Originally, I was thinking of buying a Weigand Combat Weig-A-Tinny Rail. The Allchin product has several advantages. It is shorter in length, more compact and will position the dot sight closer to the revolver's bore.

I would appreciate any and all of your comments about what the verified buyers had to say about these mounts. What difficulties, if any, did you experience when attaching the sights to them? Did any problems crop up when installing the mounts into the rear sight cuts in the topstraps? Was sighting-in easy to accomplish? How well have these mounts held up over the long term?

Thank you very much.

P.S.

EGW also offers a red dot sight mount which appears to be similar to Allchin's. However, there weren't any reviews about them on that company's website. Do you know anything, positive or negative, about the EGW product?

I have both an Allchin and a Raptor. They are very similar in design. The Allchil is slightly larger, and has the previously mentioned independent locator pins, nylon or similar material. Mine were a b@#$%@ to lined up but once all 4 in place assembled tightly. I have a Burris FF2 on that one, and eventually I will have to remove as the battery is changed from the bottom. Once on and in use it is fine.

The Raptor is slightly smaller and sits just a few thousandths lower. It has been on my gun for long enough I don't recall any difficulty mounting it or mounting the Burris FF3 that is mounted on it.

I could actually recommend either one for a solid mount, but would lean to the Raptor. If I recall correctly the prices were both similar also.

Agree with H Richard the Raptor would be my choice but unfortunately they appear to be out of business. Don't have an Allchin but they seem to be the next best alternative.

Don't have an EGW mount either but when looking at mounts I noted that the EGW's are held on by a single screw and don't appear to cover all of the mounting holes in the frame of the gun. I would check that before I bought an EGW.

Sighting in for any particular distance will be the same for whatever mount you choose, although the closer the sight is to the bore should generally help keep your zero within a reasonable tolerance as your target distance varies from your sight-in distance.

I have 4 or 5 Allchin mounts with Fastfire IIIs. The mounts work very well. Along with the small nylon pins I just visually align the sight to the base before tightening the screws. Have never had one move yet. The last one that I installed I customized. I scribed around the Fastfire III and filed off the overhanging bits of the Allchin base. Polished up the edges and it looks factory.

I ordered an Allchin not long ago after having the Raptor on two other Smiths. Yes your description of the locator pins pretty much is what I thought too. I much prefer the Raptor design as it is specifically designed for the sights I use - Burris Fastfire III/Vortex Venom with 4 integral locators. Of course like stated Raptor might be done for good.

The Allchin is available in Black and I was going to use it on my 586 which has a Silver Raptor and move it to a 617. But with the loose pins on the Allchin I just mounted it on the 617. Probably would have worked fine on the 586 but the 617 has zero recoil.

Compared to my Raptor mounts I needed a lot of windage adjustment to get centered where on my Raptor mounts needed very little , most of the adjustment was in the elevation.

The 617 shoots great with the Allchin/Vortex Venom combo but if the Raptor was available I would have bought it.
