Don't waste your money on trip insurance.

My wife and I planned a trip to England for the second half of May. On November 17, 2019 I bought round-trip airline tickets from Dulles to Heathrow from American Airlines. Of course, the website just about twists your arm off to get you to buy trip insurance. Normally I don't, but for the amount of these tickets I decided to do it.

Of course, it now is obvious we won't be traveling to England on May 17, 2020. We'll be lucky if we can travel to the grocery store by then.

So I started looking at my alternatives. I felt confident and was patting myself on the back for buying insurance.

Well . . . American Airlines says we can re-schedule, but the substituted trip must be done before the end of 2020. Also, if the ticket costs more, we pay the difference. Biggest problem is, there will be no opportunity to schedule a trip before the end of the year (and I doubt this Corona virus pandemic will be sorted out in that timeframe).

So, my fall-back: trip insurance. NOPE!

A travel lock-down and a pandemic are not "covered reasons" to collect under the policy!

I hope these swindlers catch Corona virus and can't find a hospital bed.

Do you get my drift? I'm pi$$ed!

I got two insurances for my upcoming Gate One Travel tour in Italy. The second insurance was supposed to allow cancelation for any reason. But it's paid only as a credit for future travel.
I have my doubts about the survival of both Gate One and the insurance underwriter. We'll see.

I was going to Jamaica for a family members wedding next month. I bought the insurance through Expedia and was allowed to cancel all aspects of the trip and was refunded all my money except the amount of the insurance coverage. We were extremely happy with our outcome to this unfortunate situation occurring.

Some CC's have trip insurance as a benefit, although they will put you through hoops to collect. I know Chase Sapphire does. I have collected from them because of delayed flights before.... but it was a PIA.

Well that's not good news. Had a trip scheduled to NYC around first part of June and flight up & back was with American also. I also bought the trip insurance. Not nearly the same loss as yours but this sucks. ****.

Don't lose heart yet. I am guessing that AA will be forced to give refunds, if not by government edict, then in order to avoid a huge PR nightmare that they will never recover from. We have never seen a situation like this in our lifetime, and I am guessing that all the normal rules are off, or soon will be.

Warranties and insurance will cover anything that does not happen, but administratively do not cover anything that does happen. If the policy covers this, notwithstanding what anyone at the company says. sue them. That is the first thing that an insurance company actually pays any attention to. Small claims court may be applicable.

As Turq mentioned, if you paid with a credit card check with them. We once had to cancel a $9000+ trip to Alaska because my wife had an eye infection and had to get cattarac surgery as soon as it healed and Holland America refunded $3000 and Citi bank gave us $5200 back. But since then Citi has a dollar limit on refunds. But it's worth checking with your CC. That's why I buy just about everything with my card.

I'll give y'all some free legal advice.
Listen closely.
READ ANYTHING BEFORE YOU SIGN AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IT SAYS. This applies to everything, policies, warranties, contracts, criminal statutes, whatever. Most of the time you will say what the fandango, it ain't worth buying, signing or whatever. Don't let ANYONE bullrush you into signing ANYTHING until you have read AND understand what you are signing. Most of the time the amount you are talking about is too small to justify the expense of suing so they get away with some sleazystuff-but remember YOU signed it!

As one crusty old judge once said "Signatures are not mere ornaments on a document"

I clicked on the link in the OPs post for Allianz insurance and to sum it up in a nutshell, "they suck!" I thought that was the whole point of insurance to cover the cost of the flight if you can't make it but they will only pay out under very few circumstances.

They may however, offer the highest kickback to the seller.
