Airlines Steeling Our Money

So, you knowingly and voluntarily entered into a non-refundable contract. Bummer. But at least they are still willing to honor the agreement, as written and purchased.

Case closed.

The contract said Non refundable. But I could still use the $ for another ticket at some other time. If I canceled because I changed my mind, then case closed.

Buttttt, THEY canceled on me. I was ready and able to go.

The Cruise line refunded my $4000, and EVEN gave me a $2000 credit besides.

I like flying but sure hate all the stupid rules. I have not flown in 9 years but we intend to go to Alaska this summer probably my last chance for that so I will suck it up and put up with the nonsense so my buddy can take us salmon and halibut fishing and maybe get to see Denali again.
To far to walk and driving for me anymore is anything but pleasure. Beside driving you have to go through Canada and all their idiocy.

"I may just take my car and vacation within 200 miles from home. "

There you go, problem solved.

We are done flying commercial. We have had our last commercial flight. IT's just too much hassle...way too much! The airports are crazy. there just isn't any any place we want to go bad enough to put up with all that.
I am happy to be done with it!

That's interesting, BWZ. Took a brief look. Are you suggesting to transfer, ferry to ferry, up the coast from Washington until Alaska, sleeping in the car along the way?

No. The Marine Highway is a fleet of ferries with varied itineraries, some being quite long-distance multi-day trips.

It's been quite a while since my last 5 day float down from AK, but I just selected two points I'm familiar with for a hypothetical trip, Bellingham WA and Homer AK.
Example: Someone could go direct on a single ferry, the Kennicott, between those two points, leaving WA 7-16 and arriving AK 7-22. They could bring a vehicle, and book a cabin for a relaxed cruise up the inside passage.
We once drove to AK and floated back, and it was great both ways.

I love to drive, and to ride my motorcycle, but if the drive isn't part of the trip, and you just need to get from Point A to Point B, you can't beat flying.

I fly a lot, both for work and for pleasure. Every hour in the air saves you 500+ miles on the road and 8 hours of your time. And: It's the only practical way to travel overseas or very long distances.

Yes, it can be a hassle. And yes, some airport or airline employees can be rude or condescending (just as in any other business). But there are ways to reduce the aggravation simply by planning ahead.

First, know the policies of the airline you're using (how many bags can you bring...what are the size limits for carry-on bags, etc., etc.?) and then follow those policies. Many of the disputes I see between airlines and passengers result from people not following those policies, and then getting angry at airline employees who are doing their jobs by enforcing the rules.

Secondly, get to the airport on time. Plan to walk in the door at least two hours before your flight, and you'll be fine.

Third, know what TSA's security rules and policies are, and abide by them. And if a TSA officer acts improperly, or does something that offends you, stay calm, and ask to speak with a supervisor...losing your temper is almost guaranteed to end badly for you.

Here are some links, fyi... :)

Beemerguy53 makes an excellent point. If you book a flight or a cruise etc. you are entering into a contract with the service provider. It is certainly wise to read and understand what you are agreeing to before completing the transaction.

I personally quite enjoy travelling and pre-pandemic would take 2 or 3 international trips each year as there are places I enjoy visiting where driving is not an option. I never found the experience very onerous as I knew what to expect and planned for it. I suspect that because wife was a flight attendant for 23 years and we often travelled I was possibly more experienced than many travelers. I look forward to flying again as international borders begin to open, I miss it terribly.

You guys must be using the wrong airlines.

I don't cruise, but I've been on flights to and from Europe twice under Covid, once last summer and then over the recent holidays, just returned last week right out of the maws of Omicron.

Each of these flights required multiple rebookings and reroutings, especially the summer trip which was rescheduled four times since the year before. Some changes were my issues, some the airline's. The flexibility of Delta in all the changes was impressive; and when I finally got to go, I ended up with a few hundred dollars refund because ticket costs were lower on my final routing. I'm not complaining.

As with most other relationships in life, you get what you give. A cooperative attitude, a little kindness, a calm demeanor, can disarm even the most callous, hard-hearted customer service representative for any business.

Because of Covid, I had to re-schedule a planned trip to Germany three weeks ago. There were many flights that had been cancelled, many passengers who needed to re-book, and the young lady at American Airlines who took my call sounded weary and worn-out...understandably!

I did my best to be patient and low key as she worked with me. When I finalized the new reservation, she upgraded my seat on two of my four flights, at no charge and without my asking her to. I'm quite certain that wouldn't have happened if I had berated her or the airline, or demanded that she do this-or-that my way.

My mom rode down here with me last August and flew back to Cincinnati.

She flew out of Sanford Orlando on Allegiant. Non stop flight was $34.00. She spent a couple weeks here and needed a average size suitcase. They charged her over $70 for one checked bag.

Odd when a person can fly for about half the cost of a suitcase that weighed less than 40 pounds.

I heard you cant even get a free drink of water on a flight now.
