I accumulate no dash, 4 screw S&W's; however a birth year gun was a something kinda neat to have....EXCEPT..I was born 1/15/44.... Tough to locate... I was fortunate enoughto surf upon a victory model with a letter... shipped 1/10/44...HOW'S THAT.... I need to know what is the "P' that is stamped above the cyl. release and just behind the recoil shied ????
I'll come back in a little bit with all the particulars and photos...
TIA,
JIM..................

Update: 5", V490437, numbers match ( bbl., extractor star, & cly.) rt. side bbl. marked 38 S&W, no proofs, Jinks letter can be seen in the Victory data base post #721..(filched off of the G/B auction I bought it from) grips correct but don't match gun,(667734)..
Still need info on "P" on left frame????
Thanx,
JIM..............

I believe it is a standard proof stamping, per a standard reference placed after 11/1943 and approximately V450000. Hope this is helpful.

Well, it was a US military revolver, so I presume it was put there by the factory or a military inspector. Am I missing something about the question?

You may see various unit or acceptance markings stamped on some of the Commonwealth revolvers, but not actual British proof marks. The British did proof those released as surplus for civilian sale after WWII, and you may see London or Birmingham proofs on those.

Cool Jim. 5 days is pretty close. I wonder if someone has on shipped on THE DAY he/she was born.

I have a 3 digit k22 I know was shipped March '47 and my bday is Mar 19, 1947. I can't decide if I want to know for sure or just keep hoping it is a Bday gun.

Wow, that's pretty close. I always wondered if anyone had one shipped on the day "they" were.
I have a beautiful post war 6 1/2" Heavy Duty that Mr Jinks says was shipped in June of 1956. I was shipped on June 20, 1956 so I have to get a letter on that one. My gun has original numbers matching grips. My original grips are long gone...along with a lot of hair, eyesight, memory... etc.
