Dropped into my LGS having a bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket. Not looking for anything in particular, just something interesting.
Well I found it. They had a beautiful, used 4” 29 Classic. Only thing was it had these ugly oversized rubber grips(X Frame?). The blueing was the current deep black that looked like black glass. Tight gap, locked tight, a slight turn line but all in all a really nice gun, along the lines I’ve been looking for. The thing that really caught my eye was the price. Originally $850, marked down to $650!! What!!! I was drooling, ready to lay out my money when the clerk told me the reason for the price reduction. Bubba done round butted it! They said they didn’t know about it when they bought it. Afterwards they wanted to see what they needed to replace those fugly Goodyears off, and found the carnage.
I’m glad they told me. I’d have been upset if I’d been the one to discover the damage at my bench.
I bought a used 2” 66–1 for a good price at a different shop and when I got it home, what I thought was encrusted dirt around the Pachmayr’s was pitting, and the grip frame has a scratch on the left side where some knucklhead removed the one piece Pachs without removing the screw.
I was able to sand out the pitting but haven’t tried to mess with the scratch.
Luckily with factory magnas it can’t be discerned, but I know it’s there.

I think I would have bought that anyway. With all the new guns being round butt there are some great round to square grips out there. I have a Model 25-2 that has the same issue. Doesn’t affect the shooting pleasure one bit.

If you’re in the “Burgh” and interested, I’ll PM you the shop.

If on a website, I always ask for pics without grips. If I am buying in a store, I ask that the grips be pulled. It aggravates many sellers, but that does not bother me in the least.

I walked into a pawn shop once and saw something I was interested in, and asked the guy to pull the grips. He said why? I said so I can tell if the grip numbers match the gun. He said assume they don't. I said, then I am not interested and left

I agree with Pete, most places don't use the word service, after customer anymore. As for the RB, when did S&W start round butting all of the N frames? The X frame grips do a great job on recoil absorption, but they probably would be to large in your hands if they made them for a square butt.

I guess I should have asked them to pull the grip and surveyed the carnage for myself, and see if it could have been saved. I just envisioned someone took an angle grinder to it.
It’s a shame as it was otherwise a beaut!

Depending upon how badly the RB "conversion" was done... and if the serial number was involved... $650 might be a good deal.

So you never saw it with no grips? Is “carnage” your word or theirs?
I would have had to look. It’s possible that the conversion was done professionally. Long shot: it may have come from the factory round. It’s always a possibility the shop didn’t know what they were talking about. Wouldn’t be the first. Box? $650…. I’d have talked them down if I could have and bought it.

Same thing happened to me. Model 28 from Gunbroker. Fugly rubber grip. Removed it to see RB hack job. Seller ghosted me, of course.
Luckily, the cut was a bit oversized, so I made the best of a bad situation:

The "Classic" Model 29 was introduced in the dash 5 revision with a round butt frame in 5" and 6.5" lengths only ,
Im guessing that its actually not a Model 29 "Classic" with the full barrel underlug?
If it is a four inch "Model 29" (no dash) at the price it would be hard to pass if you needed a shooter but all collectability is gone.

I have a 29 Classic, 6-1/2" bbl. Would've preferred the 5" bbl, but I got a good price, so I went with it.

They're just beautiful guns, IMO. I love the lugged bbl.
