Almost empty shelves at Wal-Mart

I went to Wall World on Saturday to pick up some bulk .22's for a class I'm teaching next weekend. They had no NO bulk pack .22's or bulk pack pistol ammo. I saw no more than 100 rounds of any pistol caliber on the shel. Same for centerfire rifle ammo. Seemed to have plenty of shotgun shells though.

I have been reading the various threads about this but this is the first time I've seen it first hand locally. The ammo shelves were virtually empty.

I hope they get restocked soon so I can hoard some more!!

I noticed the same thing last week here in ABQ on Academy. (I was in sporting goods looking for a duffel bag and just checked out the ammo to see if there were any special sales - sometimes I get lucky that way.

) I'd stocked up when the Ds took Congress two years ago so I'm cool, but I was surprised to see how there's apparently been a bit of a buying frenzy out there.

All the Hornady ammo at MidwayUSA is backordered. I think this means after inventory for taxes the price of ammo will go up upon restocking. My guess.

Hopefully and maybe.....just maybe the current lack of ammo means the ammo makers have already finished their raw material stock of lead, brass, and copper that they bought at record highs and are now making ammo with the new stock bought far cheaper thus maybe making future ammo cheaper. I know this a long shot but it could seem plausible.

Your theory works with fuel. You may be onto something....hopefully.

I gave up on Wally World, Dicks, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc. I went to a gun show last weekend and they must have thought their ammo was solid gold. One of my brothers told me where he has been buying some of his ammo, ammo4guns dot com. I picked up 2 cases Fed XM193 5.56 x 45 at $250 per case and 2 cases Winchester white box 9mm at $120 per case. Saved over $400 from what they wanted at the gun show. Ahh, internet purchases. Save that 9.25% TN Sales Tax and $.10 per carton ammo tax, but still have to pay shipping. Still come out a few $ ahead.

The Wal-Mart in Santa Fe had plenty of bulk pack .22s but they didn't have the bulk pack centerfire pistol ammo either.

The Turner's outdoorsman I frequent has plenty of centerfire ammo. There never seems to be enough bulk pack .22's. There seems to be plenty of ammo at the Wal Marts as well. No ammo shortage here in Ca. Bruce

My local Wally World put some new .38 Special 130Grn FMJ Winchester on the shelve today priced at $31.97 for a 100 rd box. They also had a good stock of Remington 50 Round 130 FMJ's at $16.57

Only other loading available in either .357 or 38 was 2 100rd boxes of .357 Remington 125jhp priced at $46.97

The Winchester side of the shelf was empty yesterday, so it it appears they haven't jacked the price any further on the new stuff....yet

All this makes me glad that I started really stocking up in 2005 and into 2008. Although no one really has enough ammo, I have enough to last me a long, long time. I hope ammo prices get under control at some point.

Let's see, I'm 57 and have been buying ammo since I was 13 (for a .303 Jungle Carbine, my first rifle). I've never seen ammo go down significantly in all that time, only up. But hey, maybe I'll be surprised? However, I ain't holding my breath waiting to see it because I don't look good in blue.

I bought the last 2 Federal 550 round bulk pack .22's yesterday at our local WalMart. They sill had a Remington Bulk of 525 Golden Bullet and a few single boxes of 50 rounds. Greg

Stopped by my local Wallyworld today, the shelves were pretty bare. Guy that runs the dept told me that he is having a hard time getting any ammo, most of it is out of stock or backordered at the ditribution warehouse. He has no idea when they will be restocking since they usually do not find the warehouse out of stock.

I was at our local WM yesterday and the ammo situation was dire. The only thing on the shelves was some .22-250 rifle ammo, and a few boxes of 20 gauge shells. When they have it, Remington 9mm 115 gr FMJ is still $10.97 for 50. I cant beat that anywhere.

Is nothing but fear induced rhetoric brought about by the whiplash of NRA gloom n doom prophets in regards to their predictions of consequences if their guy wasn't elected.

Thanks to them, gun rags, suppliers, manufacturers and well over half of the twenty-five percentile of gun owners in America the prophecy would seem to have been fulfilled, for the short term.

In all this flag waving show of patriotism, buying evah sidearm n stick of ammo available, I've noticed most everyone more than willing to make as much profit as possible off of hearsay.

Well boys, you can only run on a flat tire for so long. All you have to do is slow down to right at a standstill for a couple of months. You've managed to help prop up the feeding frenzy for that long. Put the shoe on the other foot. Ammunition isn't perishable, but if folks will back off, allow inventories to return to normal and maybe start gathering a little dust then you might send a positive message to the industry.

If costs for raw material and energy are down then we can lay the blame of high prices on greed, wishing to manipulate us as puppets, and our own foolishness for allowing ourselves to be tools. Be the master of your own destiny or density, it is your choice.

For crying out loud the economy is in the terlit. The prices should be low encouraging you to buy. As long as we sop 'em up like sausage gravy it ain't gonna happen.
We are our own worst enemy.

I don't disagree with a single word above...
The pricing at the largest suppliers would be up astronomically if there weren't still some sanity and a vestige of "market pricing" at the wholesale and distributor level. Didn't one of the larger ammo makers announce a significant layoff a few days ago? Does that sound like they think they're rolling in dough and orders enough to keep them running into 3rd quarter 09'? The smaller outlets are caught in the middle now. Don't raise prices, and you lower your profits on a limited supply. The big buyers (Wally etc.) aren't bending you over because they don't have to. They make their nut on volume. The last purchase I made on W W/B was $20ish a hundred for 9X19. High, but understanable coming off of $5 a gallon Diesel (ammo's heavy). So Nick's absolutely correct. Pull the throttle back on purchasing for 30-60 days and see what happens?
