Almost empty shelves at Wal-Mart

People here are contributing to this panic because I read this thread and went to 2 wal marts and all I could get in handgun ammot was 1 box of 9mm so I took it, for you Michiganders I will save you some time, Walmart at 23 mile and M53 only had a 100 pack of .357 JHP for 44.00 on the shelf for handgun ammo and 14/Van Dyke only had 1 box of 9mm which I bought and some 38 special 130 grain Winchester target loads, no other centerfire handgun ammo so don't bother, I was schocked to see how bare the shelves were. PANIC PANIC PANIC!!!!!!!!
 
After checking 3 Wallyworlds finally gave in and bought a few boxes of .38sp at Dicks Sporting Goods ( supposedly on sale- HA!). One Dicks was sold out already at 10:30AM, sale started at 9AM, the other one only had 6 boxes so the case price for 10 boxes didn't matter anyway.

Interesting story: One of my clients who operates an indoor range and gun shop told me last week that a fellow who had never owned or fired a handgun went into our local Academy and bought ALL the handgun ammo in the store. Cleaned 'em out! Then, he showed up at the indoor range to sign up for shooting lessons.

Our Wallys are mighty short on ammo, too.

I'm trying to look on the bright side. If 3 trillion $ isn't enough, perhaps we can revert to the reloadable metallic cartridge standard for barter!
 
Everyone in my area is uptight about possible civil unrest in the near future which can start & spread in a heart beat across the country.

As noted by "38-44HD45" above post, my 3 local gun shops have been selling guns/rifles to "first time" buyers as never seen before.

I doubled my normal quarterly ammo order from MidwayUSA.com just for the hell of it and just received it 100% complete. However, I had to buy some very expensive selections because most of my normal items were on backorder.

Midway.USA has approximately 250 SKU's of "223's" and 92% of them were on backorder. Had to settle for Cor-Bon 53 grain Barnes Triple-Shock @ $1.48/round!?!

Olin Corporation (Winchester Ammo) had a record quarterly profit increase of 268%...nice to see a "Made in the USA" company having record sales/profits however we are paying for it!

As my buddy stated regarding the current ammo shortage..."it's not a question of price-it's a question of availabilty."

I just checked MidwayUSA.com and they're charging nearly twice what I paid last night for a box a CCI Blazer Brass .40 180gr FMJs. What's up with that?
 
I have two local Wal-Marts, one has no ammo and the other has no workers to sell to you. Just baggy pants thugs who ignore and walk past customers with money to spend.
 
There are 4 Walmarts within 15 miles of my home in Houston. On any particular day, some will have almost no ammo and some will have almost full shelves. I have been buying Rem UMC 223 55gr FMC there for 8.47$/box of 20-rnds. This same thing was about 6.50$/box of 20-rnds at Walmart less than 1-year ago. You can generally find any of the ammo thay normally stock in one of their stores here.
I am happy to see that someone paid more for 223 ammo from Midway than I did. I bought 1000 rds of Blackhills 223 77gr match from Midwqay for about 960$. High, but still less than 1.48$/rnd.
 
I checked the Walmart here today. Basically no handgun ammo, no 22 cal. bulk and little rifle ammo. I was able to get some Federal .243 Winchester.
 
Stock up on 22 ammo. S&W has a new black M&P (AR-style) coming out in "22". This rifle was introduced at the 2009 January SHOT Show in Orlando and the buyer reception was unreal.

My local gun shop has 7 orders (including mine) already and the rifle has not been advertised at all. Expect a long wait for this one!
 
Looks can be deceiving. Stopped by Walmart last night to grab a loaf of bread and decided to check on their stock of 9x19 ammo.

The clerk was on the phone so I scanned the shelves. All I saw was a few 100rd boxes of WW 9x19, a couple boxes of Blazer brass .40S&W and 230gr 45 ACP.

Figured I was SOL and was just getting ready to walk away when the clerk hung up and asked if she could help me.

"No thanks, was just checking to see if you had any 9x19".
"Yes we do".
"Just that WW?"
"No we have Blazer brass cased".
"Oh, how much?"
"How much you want"
"Like I said, how much you got, a case?"

She bends down behind the counter and comes up with case minus two boxes. She then goes to the display case behind her, digs in the back and comes up with two more boxes to make it an even 1000rds.

At $8.97 a box I bought them all.

Evidently they aren't even bothering to stock the shelves or pull items on the shelves up to the front as stuff sells.

Didn't ask if she had behind the counter but I'm guessing she didn't. I've got about 6-8 cases in storage now plus a few thousand fired cases, powder and reloading dies. From now on I believe I'll just pick up some primers and look for deals on jacketed bullets and just shoot and reload what I have.

Figuring at least three to maybe five reloads per case I'll have the potential for 20,000 rounds if not more.

That ought to hold me for the next four years at least.
 
Richard, I have no experience with blazer brass, but I have several hundred pieces of brass that I must have reloaded a dozen times and only a handful of cases have split. Most of it is Remington. I generally heavy crimp everything, but I never flare the case mouth more than is necessary to accept the bullet. Brass can last a very long time.
 
I though you guys were exaggerating. Went to WalMart today near Columbus and they 25 ACP, 38 Special, 357 Mag and bunch of empty shelf space. Rifle wise they were not much better. Some 223 and 30-06 was all that was left.
 
I just got out of Wal-Mart and bought six bricks of the 550ct. .22 LR Federals for $13.97/brick.

They had just gotten in two cases...
and since I have a couple of rounds already of .22 LR, I thought I should leave a bit for someone else.

She got some miscellaneous, unneeded junk- like toilet paper.
 
Checked my local WM for ammo last week. Picked up three bricks of Federal 22 and the last box of W/W .45ACP/JHP. They had a few boxes of .38/.357/.380, a couple packs of UMC .223, and trap loads for shotguns. A few boxes each of the normal hunting calibers - .243, .270, .30-06, .30-30.

Pretty empty shelves.
 
I'm out here in Laramie, Wyoming and the WalMart has nothing but a few odd-ball things and some sport shotgun shells. Guy behind the counter said he's sick of havin' nothin' to sell. Drove to Cheyenne last week---they had two boxes of .357 and that was about it... Does anyone know exactly why the manufacturers aren't providing stock? Rumor I heard from the clerk was that they all have decided to appease Obama by implementing micro-stamping & they need time to get set up for it.
 
It's simple supply and demand. In this case demand is out pacing supply.

The clerk you spoke with is full of it.
 
This scare about ammo micro-stamping is a load of crap. The rumors were spread by the company that is trying to sell the technology for the micro-stamping. The bills introduced in the state legislatures requiring this stamping are going nowhere. We may have ammo supply/price problems but not because of this.

In the past five days I checked Walmart stores in Atlanta (one store), Mobil (one store), and Houston (3 stores). All had very little ammo.
 
You have to find out when they restock and hit them then. In the DFW area 380 is like hens teeth. My local Academy got 9 boxes and it was gone in 10 minutes.
