Altamont Grips - Good or Bad?

Since I've had only one set of Altamonts I probably shouldn't be commenting. They came OEM on my Md 657 Classic Hunter. S&W said they were rosewood but they looked like plastic and the fit to my hand was awful. Some of the pics posted here look very nice, much better than the ones on my 657. I've been an Ahrends user for several years now, real wood, reasonable price and great fit for medium sized hand.

YES I read the post - he wanted opinions of quality which is exactly what I answered him with. Weather one puts them on a 340 or any other model would not change my answer.

I like mine! I have Altamont stocks on two of my revolvers.

Thanks for looking at my Altamont stocks.

God bless,

Placed my order today. I'll update this site when they come in. I'd post pics but @ my age can barely operate the flip phone.

I have them on my 986 round to square but. They are great folks to work with and there service is excellent. Mine are the Bonded Ivory look material with scrimshaw US Army Emblem. VERY SATISFIED

Altamont grips are beautiful. They fit great. They have several options for all frame variations. But if you ever shoot a 44 mag with a set you think what were they thinking putting these thin little things on here. They are nice quality though. Just not my cup of tea for a magnum. Although I have a set of the service magna type on one model 29. But it's retired to 44 special loads. (My dads -2, very sentimental, had thousands of rounds through it). I like the magna style altamonts. Not the target style. To narrow. Culina grips or factory made are my favorite

Laminate is not plywood, it is hardwood bonded together. We had very expensive laminate butcher blocks at the family dairy for decades. Fine furniture is often made of laminate hardwood.

Plywood is very cheap wood veneer bonded at opposite grain between layers. It is common for plywood to be full of voids on their inner layers.

I have 3 sets of stocks from Altamont. One set of boot grips for a J frame, one set of Altai grips for a J frame, and a set of combats for a K frame.

All have fit correctly from the moment I put them on. The combats are the newest in silverblack and are beautiful. I love Altamont stocks. They seem to fit my hand well. Hope this helps!

Good!
I have a few sets, but this is the only picture I have - J frame, super walnut boot.

Round to sq but too thin. You won't like these. Quality is excellent and fit was super. Buy originals if you can find them.

They are great grips, perfect fit for my 66-8 and will purchase a set for my new 629-6.

Hey Guys - very timely thread as I have my first S&W on the way - a 686. I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on the Altamonts versus Hogues wood grips. The Altamonts seem to be cheaper all around compared to the checkered Hogue options. I've used Hogues exclusively on my Ruger GP100 and have been satisfied.
