Hi,

A few weeks ago I acquired a 29-3 6" in Nickel.
I finally got to the range to shoot it.
Revolver is far more accurate than I.

But I found the original wooden grips to be too fat at the bottom. And therefore the revolver shifts in my grip when fired, resulting in a banged-up middle finger.

SO I'm looking for advice for a replacement grip
My pinky is short, but the other fingers are long. I also need some padding on the top of the backstrap.

I once tried a revolver with a hogue grip that I liked, but that was an older model in .38 Special

Advice is welcome.
Thank you

If you want a comfortable grip for shooting a Hogue mono grip is excellent. It's a soft rubber with finger grooves and is fairly cheap selling for like $20.

I was shooting full house 44 mag ammo the other day with wood Kim Ahrends finger groove wood grips and the gun was tearing up my hand also.I think for shooting I will be getting the Hogue mono grips also.

Yes, absolutely try the Hogue monogrip. Extremely comfortable and reasonably priced. In addition to soft rubber , they also make them out of fancy grain hardwoods at a higher cost. Just make sure you specify N frame, and round butt or square butt as they're not interchangeable.

Hold on to the original grips! No, they're not especially comfortable but they help the gun hold its value.

BUT if you do decide to sell them.....(hint hint)

These are on a 686, but are as comfortable as they are good looking. Handle full house .357's easily, and I would feel would work as well on a .44. Hogue makes them out of lots of different woods.

I have fired tens of thousands of full house .44 magnums and I will assure you that I would NOT be able to do so if I didn't have Pachmayr's on my guns.

My favorites today, are Pachmayr Decelerator grips. Either Hogues or Pachmayr should have a set of grips that please you. The ideal situation would be to try before you buy (if you have shooting buddies who have some, etc).

Over the years it has become something of a sad irony to me that the best stocks for actually shooting a 44 Magnum are also among the most unattractive. These would be, IMHO, Pachmayr Presentations - not Grippers. Take your pick as to large or small sizes.

As a compromise, I settled on smooth targets, for my purposes, since I do not do much double-action shooting, and they have served me well. There is nothing sacred about S&W stocks, if you actually shoot your guns. On smooth targets, if the factory profile does not work for you, they are easily re-shaped, there is no checkering to fool with, and there is plenty of material there.

I personally like the small Pachmayr presentation grips for shooting.
I have fought the grip thing for years and invested a fortune trying to find the right grip.
I finally modified a set of Herrett's to fit my hand. One of these days I'll have the profile duplicated in nice wood.

Our own forum member VM makes the best set of carry stocks for a square butt N frame that I've ever used.
Here's a pic of a set of targets (like M29since14 is describing) and a set of targets after he chops & smooths them out!

(revolvers are a 629-4 & 29-3.)

Shortening and narrowing a factory set of targets makes for a very concealable and shootable 44mag grip, IMHO.

And it looks pretty darn cool too!
