Always carry a knife!

I always carry a knife, but certain places don't allow them that I frequent like schools, airlines, municipalities, sporting events and concerts, etc. I begrudgingly leave it at home or in my vehicle. It's like I left a part of me behind.

I received my first REAL knife (a Boy Scout knife) when I was eleven and entered the Scouts. My dad gave it to me on the condition I did not lose it. Up to that point I was careless with the little blunt nosed knife/file/tool described in post # 13 by rosewood, and lost five or six of them prior to this. Proud to say I still have the Scout knife, it's 49 years old and sits in retirement in the top drawer of my dresser.

Does anyone remember the little knife rosewood described? It was sold in small variety stores, on a card board display of about twenty-four of them for about fifty cents. Back then, my buddies and I scoured the streets/woods whatever, to find redeemable glass bottles that we would turn in for two cents each.

Every day...

It seems to me that most knives today are really easy to sharpen, but don't hold an edge worth a flip. Most of my real knives are older, were hard to sharpen, but will hold an edge until you get the job done. I don't loan my knives.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

A Boy Scout knife in JHS/HS, a demo knife in my Army days-on a lanyard attached to my belt. Nowadays a Leatherman and a Buck knife in sheaths on my belt. I have spare knives and a second Leatherman, I've always believed if it's worth having it's worth having more than one of, and when I have spares I never seem to loose them. My Leathermans have my initials engraved on them, another way to ensure you get them back.

My grandfather gave me my first pocket knife when I was six years old and I've carried one practically every day since then.

This 1920 Schrade "safety button" knife (aka switchblade) was a gift from a dear friend. At first, I hesitated in carrying it, but he reproved me with, "This is a working man's knife and I expect you to carry it and use it!" And I do. It cuts strings on hay bales, assists in opening feed sacks, opens my mail, and just about any other chore where a knife comes in handy.

When I went to outdoor school for 6TH grade we were told to bring a pocket knife. This was a small hick town. Redneck Central. Half of us showed up with Kabars on our belts.:D Well, they thought that a bunch of kids probably shouldn't be running through the woods with half a foot of sharp steel hanging down at their sides, so they collected all the belt knives to give back to us at the end. When they asked for mine, I gave it to them, then pulled out one of my "pocket knives". It was a 2 bladed slip joint knife with about 4.5" blades. Big, heavy sucker. The counselors were high school upperclassmen and mine looked at that knife and looked at me and asked, "Can you use that without hurting yourself?" I just turned and threw it at a tree about 15 feet away and stuck it dead center in the trunk. I told him I could handle it.:D
What he didn't know was for the 15-20 minutes we were waiting for him to show up, we were practicing throwing knives at trees. I had just gotten the distance worked out.:D

There's a name from the past. He ended up serving on the Los Angeles Sheriff's Office after show biz. He was shot at some point shot during that career, and I think that he took a medical retirement.

Speaking of knives, I carried this Kbar and Demo knife for many years in at least 10 third world countries. Both survived the adventures and now reside easy in retirement.

I thought Eddie, (Ken Osmond,) was LAPD.

I guess the first knife I ever had was a Cub Scout knife. I've had one of some sort or another ever since. I always carry a small Swiss Army knife on my keychain.

I carry a knife, always. Often two. First thing in my pocket when I get dressed, last thing out at night. There are multiples in any of my vehicles, especially on my truck.
My wife carries a knife. Two, actually,. Buck lockblade and a SAK.
Both my daughters carry knives - SAKs that I gave them. Daughter #2 was here a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that she'd misplaced her SAK and could I get her another one. I just took mine out of my pocket and handed it to her. Now I can buy another one.

On the airport thing, I forgot to put my Leatherman on my checked baggage on an Africa trip once. Realized it after the bags were gone and we were in line. I exited and buried the Leatherman in a large potted plant, then retrieved it on the return trip.

Glad to know someone else remembers those. My current multi-tool that goes with me everywhere is a Leatherman micro, does everything that original "multi-tool" did and more. Got me wanting to find another for old time sake.

I also have a Ganzo Firebird (Spyderco knockoff) that goes with me everywhere, retired the 2 Spydercos to the safe. The Ganzo only cost me about $9 and I bought several in case I ever lose one or need to ditch one. Holds an edge just as good as the Spydercos.
