Unfortunately, every day somewhere in a country this size that "weird neighbor that always yelled at people", or the "strange kid down the block that was always talking to himself", or the "brother-in-law that keeps going off his meds and winds up living on the street two or three times a year" finally manages to go too far and hurt someone. Then everyone wonders why they weren't committed in the first place.
Of course, if you had suggested that they be committed before they had hurt someone you would have been told to mind your own business, that the poor unfortunate in question was just misunderstood, or "he's turning his life around and he wouldn't hurt a fly".
The same folks who wouldn't dare inconvenience these sick people or infringe on their rights to do as they please seem to have no problem infringing on the rights of us who don't hurt anyone and who don't display aberrant behavior but we do own guns.
When there is a big push on for gun control legislation the willing accomplices in the media go out of their way to make sure local incidents that usually don't get that much notice are given national publicity. They beat the drum loudly and shine the light on every incident they can dig up to drive home their point. At the same time, they'll blatantly ignore any stories where the proper use of a firearm saved a life or prevented further mayhem. Those stories don't fit their agenda.
It's like the "epidemic of homelessness" that only seems to be reported as such a problem when the Left isn't in power . . .
