Amazing dog’s sniffer

My puppy never ceases to amaze me. I know the Weimaraner breed has a pretty good sense of smell, as well as about all 4-legged mammals, but today she blew me away. I was in the cellar listening to the radio and waiting for the dryer to finish. She went over to the door to be let out, like right away. I let her out and there was a rabbit in my driveway and off she went to chase it through the fence. No way she heard it with the noise inside, I presume. The door was brand new this past fall, both doors are well sealed. Maybe she smelled it through the cement block wall? There’s a thread here about the quail dogs and they impress the heck out of me, too. She’ll be two years old next Tuesday. I don’t hunt anymore, but that’s what a beagle was for when I did.
I don’t have a lot of cool stuff like many of yinz do so I have to brag up my Angel girl when I can! Carry on.

Their sense of smell is indeed fantastic. One of our K9 deputies explained it to me. When we go into McDs we can smell beef and grease etc. The dog smells the beef, bread, onion, ketchup, sesame seeds, pickles, Coke, etc. Not to mention everyone in there. Never try to escape a K9 cop. Things will end bad for you.

We, as humans, have about 5 million smell receptors. Dogs? 150-300 million. They can smell things under 30 feet of water. They can smell the minute changes in body chemistry that precedes a seizure or low blood sugar. Not to mention their noses are designed for better sniffing. Plus, they have a great memory for scents. Our beagle could tell when we got to a certain road on the way to deer camp that told her we were close. Didn't smell any different to us, but she could tell. Every year.

One of my dogs growing up, had a thing for certain smells. A 7 to 14 August days dead ground-hog was his favorite perfume. He applied it liberally! Rotting skunk was another smell high on his list.

People think my passion for Limburger cheese is down right anti-social! They have never spent hours getting your best friend all spiffed up, only to have him load his fur full of an aroma you'll never forget!

He was 14 when he passed 45 years ago, and I miss him every time I get a whiff of skunk!

Zelda gets plenty of sniffing in on walks, but the full blown DNA testing gets limited.

A German Shepard is generally estimated to smell odors at 5-6 parts per billion. A wolf's nose is longer and has more room for scent receptacles. Amazing animals.

Jeff, Weimaranars are incredible dogs. We had one when I was a teenager. The big blue eyes eventually turn amber which I didn’t expect. Duke could run all day with endless energy. Which was good because dad would come home from work everyday with a Slim Jim in his pocket for him. On Saturday they’d get up early and got get an Egg McMuffin together

One of my fellow officers was a dog handler. He, I. and the dog used to train together. I was the "bitee". Dog was loving and friendly to me until I put on the bite sleeve.
Smell:
Was training by a railroad yard that had a track of boxcars. Couple of the boxcars had just been refurbished, new paint inside and out, with newly varnished wood floors. I got in one of the cars and the odor/fumes almost made me pass out. Handler turns the dog loose and dog runs down the track beside all the cars. As soon as he passes the car I'm in, he stops, comes back and starts barking.
Memory:
I hide and the dog searches. I hide behind an abandoned building on top of large electrical box about 8 feet off the ground. Handler turns dog loose and he makes a large circle to get my scent and then comes to the electrical box, finds me and begins barking. About 3-4 months later, we are training at the same location. This time I hide in a different spot, same area. Dog loosed and he immediately heads for the rear of the building and straight to the electrical box where I had hidden the first time and started to bark. I wasn't there so he made his circle to get my scent and found me.
Humor:
When handler got back from California there he trained and lived with the dog for weeks, he had the dog in our office with all ranking officers admiring the dog as he lay on the floor. Our supervisor, a little short, fat, feminine voiced brown noser said, as the dog licked himself, "I wish I could do that". Handler replied "go ahead, he won't bite you".

Their eyesight is mostly b&w, but incredibly sharp. They can hear and smell things we don’t know exist. Dogs really live in a different world than we do.

Bald 1, this is a fairly recent picture from this past December. Her eyes are still light, but more of a yellow. I’m still waiting for her eyes to turn amber. She’ll be two next week so I suppose they may stay lighter. Our last one’s eyes were amber like you said. All dogs are beautiful! (Compared to most humans!)
She’s not stoned, she just doesn’t like the hat!

When I picked up my Rat Terrier puppy....he had never been indoors....had not been handled....was from a farm dog litter.....He was sound a sleep in his crate....with the door open....when I opened the first pack of cookies....he bolted awake....did not have any idea what I had....but he knew he wanted some of it...clawed his way up onto the couch and insisted he wanted a share.......a memory that will not fade.....from twenty years ago....he lived a full life of fourteen years....before his heart gave out...a day does not pass that I do not think of him...looking at his picture as I make this posting

I miss my Weims. I had 6 of them. What amazes me when hunting, they can not only tell a bird has walked by some spot 10 minutes ago, but they can tell which way the bird was going.
And we will not mention the "Cheese Tax"
