for years, i've been getting amazon to donate part of my purchases to various charities.
now, i'm wondering if there is a pro firearms registered charity that i can shift funds to?
ideally, an organization with a bit more spine than the NRA?
i guess the NRA would be better than nothing, but i'm not sure it's legally a charity.
anyway, you guys know about this kinda thing, so please clue me in.

I hope this doesn't turn into another Bash-The-NRA-Thread.

I'm a bit leery of these 2A offshoot organizations. Most of them are Internet based. Their contributions to preserving our 2A rights are minimal, compared to those of the NRA.

The last time the Second Amendment Foundation filed a financial statement was 2014...three years ago, or at least one that I could find. They listed their net assets at just a hair over $4.5 million. That isn't going to go very far in the fight for 2A rights. Plus, their donor contributions dropped from $5,465,110 in 2013 to $4,084,040 in 2014. That's a huge decline for an organization with such limited assets. They talk a lot, but I don't believe they have much clout.

I guess the NRA would be better than nothing, but i'm not sure it's legally a charity.

I won't get into that whole "better than nothing" thing.

While it's true your NRA dues and other fees are not tax deductible, the NRA operates the NRA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) foundation. Your donations to that are tax deductible to the extent of the law.

Your donations through Amazon will be percentage-based, unless stated otherwise. Likely 1% or less (No, I haven't looked to see the figures). Pennies, really, in the scheme of things.

So instead of parceling your donations out to this organization or that organization, why not donate to the one organization that's proven itself time after time to be the real champion of our Second Amendment rights?

But if you want to give to other 2A groups, at least do your research yourself, instead of asking other people (like me) about them. Follow the money, see where it goes. You have a computer and a brain. Use both of them.

I'm a staunch supporter of the National Rifle Association, so what I've said here is my opinion, okay?

thanks, rusty. i'll check that.
dog, i'm not bashing the NRA. i just don't care for their policies.

from what i've heard of the second amendment foundation, their views are more in line with mine.
if you prefer the policies of the nra, by all means support them.
more than one way to skin a cat.

anyway, as you said, my donations are too small for the nra to bother with.

I don't think that is quite what he said... :D
IMO, who your enemies are says as much about you as who your friends are.
So far I haven't heard any anti Second Amendment politicians or organizations attack or bad-mouth - or even mention - the Second Amendment Foundation, but they sure do go after the NRA at every turn.
That speaks volumes to me.

oh, pooh!
i was just looking for options.
yes, yes, the nra is just wonderful. ok?
it does support background checks, right?
so, my ''pennies'' can go someplace else.

I'm not going to get into a lot of detail....but dadgumit, the NRA is still the the dominant force in securing our 2nd amendment defense and rights.

Mark my words if there was not a strong NRA in the US we would be like Great Britain, Canada and Australia ....... and this forum would be a "ghost town". Put your donations where you want, but I'm backing the one proven protector of our Gun Rights---NRA.

Don

And that isn't what I said either :D

I don't agree with the NRA 100%. I don't agree with much of anyone 100%.

But if the NRA didn't exist, neither would the private citizen's Second Amendment rights anymore. If they went away tomorrow, so would what is left of our Second Amendment rights in very short order. 5 million members speaks pretty loudly and there isn't another organization that even begins to come close.

When the anti Second Amendment crowd stops railing against the NRA as their PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE, then I'll quit supporting them. In the meantime that doesn't mean I won't support any of the other pro Second Amendment organizations in addition to supporting the NRA. I just won't be withdrawing MY support from the NRA.

Just one man's opinion...

The actual NRA doesn't do much in the realm of politics; HOWEVER, their ILA section does - put your money there

I won't get into a long debate about this. I'll just remind you and others that those policies you don't care for are why we still enjoy the right to keep and bear arms in this country.

The NRA is the loudest voice and has the deepest pockets of of any pro-2A group, and they've kept the fight for our Second Amendment rights in front of federal and state legislatures and courts for almost 150 years. No other organization can make that statement.

Perhaps "bashing" is too harsh a term, although there's been some of that on this forum recently. So I'll substitute "negative comments". Saying the NRA needs more spine is the same as saying they don't have the backbone for the fight. That's pretty negative in my book.

anyway, as you said, my donations are too small for the nra to bother with.

I didn't say that. Didn't even hint at it. Nor was I singling out your donations. I used the term "pennies" figuratively. But if you want to take it literally, then every "penny" counts. Why donate to a group or organization that doesn't have the clout to get anything done with your pennies, other than making bold statements on the Internet and making promises they can't keep?
