With IWB, be very careful of the safety coming OFF, a problem often caused by the retention strap of the holster.

I had a holster that routinely snapped the safety off. Very disconcerting when carrying cocked and locked.

Yes but as we left handed people were created by the same GOD, it is allowed to have a left handed safety and usually the ambidexterous version is the most avialable for proper carry condition!

As a southpaw, I've never had an ambi- 1911 safety that worked well. Doesn't mean that they're not out there, though. There was a good thread on Steve Camp's Handguns & Ammunition forum on this very topic about two months ago.

Well, my 3 Para's had ambi safeties and my 4 SVI's do also. As action pistol competition occasionally requires weak-hand shooting, ambi safeties a A Good Thing.

However, for CCW, it means there is twice the chance of the safety being swiped off by manifestations of Murphy's Law.

My department incorporated firing one handed with the left hand to simulate injury to the right. Up to that point, I had never had much use for ambidextrous, extended safeties or extended slide releases. Trying to manage a 1911 left handed changed all of that. I bought a Charles Daly enhanced when they were on sale for $385. The most reliable and accurate 1911 I ever owned in more than 50 years of hand gunning. No problem with the holster strap releasing the thumb safety. I would not own a holster that did not have one.

Yeah Curt, as a lefty who carrys a 1911 every day...my personal favorite is the Ed Brown tactical ambi followed by the Wilson combat version. I also tried an STI that I liked but it didnt work well with the grips I wanted to use...turns out the grips needed trimming to work with any ambi.

If properly installed either of these two brands WILL NOT "pop off". And JMB, like every one else, designed his pistol with right handers in mind. We leftys must adapt, improvise, and overcome.

The best 1911 safety for lefties that I ever saw was on the original Randalls. The whole gun was the mirror image on a standard 1911.
