American Shingle

Has anybody dealt with American Shingle? My area had a hail storm lately and now this company is putting flyers on my door saying that they can get me a new roof. They say they do all the work with your insurance company. Sounds kind of fishy to me. What do you think?

I'd say there's something stinky in Denmark. ;)

They could be a legitimate company or it could be Bubba and Earl looking for some crack money. We had both around here after Katrina. Be careful who you deal with. Ask for references.

Make your claim with your insurance company and ask the adjuster for contractor recommendations. Most insurers have preferred contractors whose work they trust and and they will guarantee.

Call your local BBB and check up on the company. Have their insurance company fax AND mail you a copy of the contractors certificate of insurance showing you as an additional insured. The certificate of insurance will show what there limits are set at. Have the insurance company set the expiration date of the cert of ins 30 days past the date the contractor thinks the work will be completed. If there general liability limits are not enough to cover replacement value of your home and all contents find someone else to do the work. MAKE SURE that they have workers comp insurance on anyone that will be putting one foot on your property. Ask them if they plan on subcontracting out any of the work. If they are subcontracting out the work get a certificate of insurance on the sub, again listing you as an additional insured and showing the sub has WC on all employees. Roofing is one of the highest risk classifications for WC claims out there. I've got several friends in the roofing business and every one of them has had at least one employee fall off of a roof.

Class III

Edited to add: They can not file a claim with your insurance company. Only you as the named insured, or the agent of record can file a claim on your behalf.

^^^^^ What he said. Plus, I would make sure that they are a local company with local references. Gypsy roofers go to where the work is, and won't be there next year when the shingles start coming off in a 10 mph wind.

:) A big +++++ to what Charlie said. If it sounds to good to be true, it most likely is. Don

If you are going to have a new roof installed, use a local roofing contractor with an established reputation. It is important to have somebody who can respond to a problem promptly and who isn't three states away. My experience has been that your insurance company is going to send an adjuster out to inspect your roof for any damage and you don't need to "work through" anybody. Call your insurance agent and let him get the ball rolling.

A word of caution on relying on the Better Business Bureau. Some years ago we used a local building contractor for a major addition to our home. We contacted the local BBB and they gave him a big thumbs up, so we felt confident in dealing with him. He turned out to be a terrible choice who did incredibly shoddy work. We then began hearing that many complaints had been filed with BBB about this individual, so we contacted them to find out why they had not told us about those problems. Their response was that, that they did not have any CURRENT complaints on this individual. They said we should have asked about past complaints if we wanted to know about them. Duh! So much for relying on the BBB.

My next door neighbor keeps old phone books from 15 and 20 years ago. I asked him why and his reply was "That's where I find my contractors. If they were in business here that long ago and are still in business, then they are doing something right. It's not that big a town".

I think he has something there.
