Ammo 101

Well I was doing some research on ammo for my new pistol and like I mentioned before I dont know much about guns. So my question is what are the major differences between ammo? Also, I was completely lost when I got in +p and +p+. I looked around for a thread but I couldnt fine one so here I am. Any help I would really appreciate .

Fyi this is a home defense weapon

Not sure from your question "what differences" you are wanting to know about? What gun do you have including barrel length? What caliber is your gun? Generally plus p is a step above the standard load in a given caliber and plus p plus is two steps above the standard load. (in power) Some guns should not be fed either as they will not take the increased pressures.

I own a fs m&p40

Looking for differences between range/practice ammo and defense ammo. Why is there brass and I think the other is steel? Not sure though

You do not have to worry about +p or +P+ with a 40 SW, factory is max. The nomenclature means increased pressure and possibly greater velocity.
US ammo had been traditionally brass and some european rifle ammo has used steel cases in military caliber. Currently some companies are making steel cased pistol ammo, since it is less expensive. Some people believe that steel is harder on firearm components ( extractor,ejector, etc ).
Practice ammo is usually FMJ/ball compared to HP for defense. It is best if you would use the same weight bullet ( as defense ammo ) to practice with since it is less than expensive per rd, And hopefully the same weight bullets will hit to the "same" point. So today i purchased a box of winchester pdx1 180gr for home defense.

Anybody have any issues with this ammo?
