I'm a high school graduate. I have received a lot of training and education in two careers over the past fifty years, but I am still a high school graduate. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on television.
When you lack expertise in a particular field, and you need the services of a professional, whether it's an auto mechanic, an orthopedic surgeon, or an appliance repairman, you can choose to accept that professional's advice, or you can dismiss him as not knowing what he's talking about, or, worse, having some dark, ulterior motive.
I have benefitted many times in my life from the work of doctors and medical scientists (including surviving a serious bout with laryngeal cancer in 1991). I have watched advances in medicine save the lives of patients who surely would have died only a few decades ago. I trust doctors to know what they're doing, and to make good decisions. Are they perfect? Are they always right? No, and they'll be the first to tell you that. But they know what they're talking about when it comes to medicine, and I don't...and that's the bottom line.
