Ammo Case for Travelling

I'm looking for a ammo case for when I fly (which is about a couple times a year).

I'm thinking a lockable case that has dimensions AROUND 9"L, 7"W, and a few inches Depth.

Any suggestions (with make and model)?

Bulldog makes a nice locking steel pistol/ammo box that goes on sale at Dunhams for about $20. Otherwise look at the NanoVault models NV100, NV200, or NV300. Generally run $20-$40

Check out Pelican cases. They come in a variety of sizes and you can padlock them shut. They are very tough. Amazon carries several.

I have looked at Pelican, that's what I am getting for my pistols (Pelican 1450). I assumed that I could get something a little cheaper for the ammo case.

Totally forgot about Pelican. My brother has one of the medium ones. He has a 5" 1911, 5 mags, and some ammo in it with room to spare. They can be over $100 but are worth it in my opinion.

Okay decided to go with Pelican for both. The 1450 for pistols, 1200 for ammo. Airlines like them in separate cases. Got TSA locks as well and for a fun side, I picked up some Peltor Sport Tacs. Amazon made money today...and others.

I've never flown with my pistol, but I might want to some day. I know there are rules to follow, but do you know any helpful tips to keep it trouble-free?

I use the MTM ammo can in orange (not for flying tho). It's a great can, lockable and for less than $20.00 really affordable.

It's bigger than the dimensions you have mentioned, but it might work for your needs...

You can use any metal, fiber or other case designed to carry small quantities of ammunition (< 11 lbs including container).

I use the original cardboard containers if possible, because they don't cause any arguments. Otherwise, I use plastic boxes by Plano, which are available for most calibers in 50 or 100 round capacity. They have real hinges and two latches, and a loop which I can put a twist tie or tie wrap for added security.

I use Plano boxes to and from the range too, because they never come open in my range bag, unlike cheaper boxes. Midway has them, or you can go on Amazon.

Pelican boxes are sturdy, but don't have partitions. I don't think they would pass TSA muster if challenged. You don't want the possibility of one bullet striking the primer of another (however remote that might be).

I’ve always put my ammo and unloaded gun in the same case.

For me it’s a Glock 27 because Hawaii has a 10 round mag limit even for retired LEO’s carrying on HR218. I put my ammo in loaded mags in a police duty type snapping mag pouch.

And I’ve always used TSA locks on the case.
It’s been a few months since I’ve flown, so I suppose the rules could have changed. They are worth looking up and printing out to have with you anyway.

My biggest complaint is the small airlines that serve Medford Oregon only allows one firearm.

If the ammo is in boxes, you don't need a Pelican case. Besides, they're large and heavy. A Pelican case for a pistol takes up half of my suitcase.

I use Plano boxes for reloads, and whenever the original box gets too ratty to hold together. I've never seen a Pelican box with partitions for ammo, and you can't carry loose ammo even in a hard sided box.

Check stores or mail order folks that sell army surplus. Pelican made a bunch of cases that originally were for holding night vision goggles. A little bigger than you described but the one that I bought is heck for stout and has two places for padlocks. I remember that I picked mine up a few years ago for $5 at a pawn shop near one of the bases here in San Antonio.

Pelican also. I recall reading something a while back how one of the top handgun competetors started using a larger Pelican for his suitcase for all his travel. It just simplified things at the airport.
