I just purchased a 640-1 (2 1/8") and I'm having no luck with forum ammo searches for that particular model. Anyone have suggestions for conceal carry ammo, either in the .38 caliber or .357 round?

Speer .38 Special 135gr Short Barrel +P Gold Dots.

It's the absolute best snubbie ammo I've ever used.

I carry my 640-1 with Speer Gold Dot 125 Gr. .357's. Manageable and accurate as can be.

I hope this helps.

Look at threads about ammo selection for other 2"ish .357s. We cover this topic all the time.

I would run Remington 125 gr. SJHP .357s in that gun, but most people aren't as recoil tolerant as I am. A step down in power would be Speer short barrel .357. Think of it as a .38+P+ in a .357 case. In .38+P, DPX, Speer short barrel, and the FBI load are all top notch. Use the one that shoots to point of aim. In std. pressure .38, I like Nyclad 125s.

For a low cost alternative Remington 125 gr. SJHP .38+Ps can be bought in bulk packs at Wally World. Not as good as the rounds above, but still a decent load.

Remington's 125 gr. Golden Saber in .357 is milder than the standard magnum load. It's more comfortable to shoot in the J-frame magnums.

Remington used to load a medium power round, using the same 125 gr. bullet as the standard round. I believe it was discontinued shortly after the .357 Golden Saber was introduced.

Just bought some Hornady critical defense 38+p for my 640, anybody know how this stuff shoots?

Speer GDHP Short Barrel .357 magnum or .38 Special +P. Your choice. IMHO the .357 isn't much different than the .38 Spcl in terms of how it feels to shoot it.

Ammo for the Centennial Magnum.

I had a large supply of Remington 110 Grain Fed-Spec, Low-Flash Magnum JHP's.... I tried them and they worked very well.

This has been my load of choice since I started carrying the 640-1 more than 10 years ago.

The USBP reported very good results with this load before it was withdrawn from service in the late 1980's. Not as good perhaps as the 125's but still very respectable.

Cor Bon DPX for lighter bullets or Speer 135 gr GD. In the steel frame gun I would probably use the Cor Bon 110gr DPX in 38+P. It sure gets high marks by those in the know. In scandium frame guns where they are limited to 120gr or heavier bullets I use the 135 Gr. GD's.
