My new 642 is the first 38 special I have carried. What defense ammo do you all carry in your Airweight 38s?

Presently I'm carrying Buffalo Bore's 158gr LSWCHC Standard Pressure in my 642-1. Fast follow-up shots and easy on the hand.

Here's a little completely unscientific test I posted awhile back.

Thanks guys, lots of good info here. RD, does the Buffalo Bore Standard pressure recoil less than the Speer Gold Dot 135 +P?

CorBon 110s. But the real point is to find what shoots to point of aim for you in your revolver. Shot placement is more important than expensive bullets.

My 637, the hammered version of the 642, contains Remington +p LSWCHPs, the softest of the FBI loads. Speer Gold Dot 135 gr Short Barrel seems to be well regarded, as are Remington Gold Sabers.

Cordially, Jack

My 642-1 went back to the factory for some minor work. When it came back, I found they'd done a complete-trigger/action job WITHOUT CHARGE, and the result is very sweet indeed.

The only fly in the ointment is that the gun no longer fires reliably with anything but Federal loads. I am prepared to accept that, and stocked-up with a couple hundred 129-Hydrashok factory loads, plus two thousand Gold Medal Match primers just for this little heater. 100% function, factory and handloads alike.

If I ever run out and can't re-supply, I'll beef up the mainspring, For now, it's all good.

I like Buffalo Bore and Remington Golden Sabers in my 642. I figure either will do the trick, if necessary.
