Has anyone used Hornady 124 gr XTP in their Shield?
Any thoughts?
Better suggestions for defense?

I use the Hornady critical defense ammo in my carry shield. It certainly is accurate in my shield and FS. Cycles perfectly. I have had no feed or ejection issues. I have no experience in the terminal performance.

The 124gr XTP bullet, depending on who loads it is generally an accurate and reliable projectile. The same weight HST, again, depending on load, performs better as a defense bullet. In a Shield, short barrel and light weight, the difference may be moot.

If you check the Pistol Forum or Lightfighter, info in the ballistics areas by Doc Roberts will give you heaps of data to digest.

Best of luck, stay safe

XTP, HST and 'LE' Gold Dot are all good in the Shield.
There are also good reports from Gold Dot 'Short Barrel'.

Speer also offers "+P+", but I wouldn't personally use any +P+ in my Shield.

I do have this load in the backup magazine, mainly because I just happen to have it on hand.
The Shield's primary load is the Hornady Critical Duty 124gr.
Any of the modern hollow point loads by reputable ammo companies are just fine. I like the concept of the polymer tip in the Critical Duty round, which in theory prevents the hollow point from prematurely filling with, say, winter coat insulation, effectively turning it into an over-penetrating, non-expanding round nose bullet.
Does it work in the Real World? Dunno ... but gel tests look good and I'm confident carrying it.
But then, as I said, I'm comfortable with virtually any of the modern hollow points. I happen to prefer the 124-gr weight.

+1 on Freedom munitions 124 gr. ammo... I fed my Shield 9 WWB, Monarch, Federal american eagle & Hornady XTP american gunner, and freedom munitions and winchester train & defend....

Of all the ammo I got the best performance & accuracy from the winchester train & defend which is 147 gr and Freedom munitions 124 gr fmj... when I use my shield for CC I use Winchester Defend which is 147gr. JHP.....

The pistol seems to like the 124 & 147 gr. loads better than 115 gr.

After trying a number of different rounds I carry either Critical Defense or Federal HST in my M&Ps (3).

Either is fine for SD.

Wow, $33.00 per 20 rounds and only 105 grains, 9mm Luger 105gr Controlled Fracturing Ammo Lehigh Defense, LLC think I'll pass on these rounds. Will stick with Federal Premium HST 9mm 124gr JHP for my Shield, 50rds. for $30.00 when you can find them.

9mm Ammo For Shield

Although I have not used the Hornady 124 gr XTP in my Shield, I have used the Hornady Critical Defense, Power Ball and, the newest, Liberty Ultra Defense.
The Liberty has had some phenomenal reviews for fragmentation
and stopping power in a defensive situation.
I have never had to use any in real life (thankfully), but I think all will perform well.

I've been carrying the Liberty as well. Liked the tests I saw and how it works in the Shield plus how it shredded some 4-5 inch thick phone books at the range.
