Hey guys, posted in the 80- present section and got not much help....

Can someone help me??? I bought me a brand new 629-6 in 5" barrel and once shes broke in I'd like to throw in a hot load or two once in awhile for giggles!!!

Can someone tell me the hotest loads that will function "Safely" WITHOUT damaging this firearm????

All POSITIVE and helpfull info. appreciated. Any smart *** remarks can be left at the door. i'm serious. Just trying to find the boundries and not get someone hurt including myself.

I tend to think I'm responsible???

By Hottest, do you mean the most velocity or the most "thump".

For most velocity look at 180gr loads.

For the most thump look at 300gr+ loads from Garrett, Buffalo Bore, & Cor Bon.
They do make some +P+ 44 Mag loads, that they consider are not safe in the S&W, read their literature closely, before ordering.

For some good heavy duty loads that kick a little less, try the Speer 270 Gold Dot Soft Point, or the Federal 300gr Cast Core.

Also the top power 240gr Federal, Winchester and Remington loads are pretty thumpy as well.

I'm not sure you really need to "break in" a revolver.

As for hot .44 Magnum ammo that won't completely break the bank give Grizzly Cartridges a look. I know $2 a round really isn't cheap but Grizzly makes very good ammo. (and it's powerful as well as made with quality bullets) You can also give DoubleTap Ammo a look see too. The DoubleTap .44 Magnum ammo is half the price of the Grizzly Ammo and is sold in a box of 50 instead of only 20 rounds. A 300gr or 320gr bullet traveling at 1,250 fps is a serious round in my book although @ $1 a round it's still expensive for range ammo...

Thanks guys, i appreciate the suggestions. i'll look into these loads CAREFULLY!

Darrell.

Look at your Wal Mart for Remington 180 grain JSP in the white and green box. I keep some of these on hand for when others on the line near me start shooting better than I do. A cylinderful of them and everybody nearby has a flinching problem or they're sitting on the far end waiting for me to finish.

Darrell,
I am venturing WAY outside my area of expertise here as, while I have the same firearm, I don't think I have ever bought a factory round for it!

Remington yellow box 240gr ammo is pretty stout.

One thing to remember about your Smith though, it has the same exact size cylinder as the Ruger. That gun is not going to be damaged by running full power 240gr and below ammo out of it.

I have some lead bullets that cruise out of mine at 1400fps. Impressive to say the least. Those same rounds travel at 1800fps from a Marlin 1894, and yes, I know that you didn't ask anything about that! ;)

At any rate, there is no factory ammo out there that will immediately damage that handgun. Maybe a "boutique" ammo will but I doubt that too.

FWIW

I would highly recommend Garrett 44 mag Defender 310gr ammo. I think if you read Randy Garrett's thoughts on 44 mag bear defensive ammo you will agree it really makes good sense. I am using the lower powered Defender 310 gr ammo in my new 629-6 5" barrel and the recoil is very managable for quick follow-up shots which are going to be needed if you have the dreaded bear encounter. If your life is on the line you can't put a price on the best bear ammo out there. No HP ammo should ever be used for any bears. IMHO. I had been using Federal 300gr castcore ammo before which is good but this Garrett ammo is better in every respect for bear defense as far as I am concerned.

I sould have added this Garrett Defender ammo is longer ( not for rifles but just revolvers ) than your common garden variety 44mag ammo and the Defender really fills the cylinder on my 629 Classic. With the accuracy of this ammo and research done by Garrett Cartridge I have full confidence with this ammo in my gun for anything I run into or runs into me out in the woods. This ammo is very gentle on your S&W 629 and I have no worries about it harming my new gun.
