Ammo in stock

What I find a bit confusing is, why there continues to be a shortage?...

1. Panic buying. The pandemic, then the riots, then the election, now the reality of the new administration and congress.

2. Millions of new gun owners both needing and panic buying ammo.

3. Each new move from Washington means the panic will not lessen in the near future.

I was talking to a friend of mine from church the other day. He had no guns at all 12 months ago. He had previously poo-pooed the need for home defense guns or to carry. We live in a "safe" community.

The subject of the current situation(s) in this country came up, and he said he now he has a carry permit and was carrying.

I asked him how he could find / afford the ammo.

Well, he then described his "arsenal"... all acquired in the last 12 months:
  • An AR-15
  • Two 9mm handguns
  • 10,000 rounds of ammunition.
Yeah, he has the money for it and he was panicked. He said he was also looking into getting a semi-auto shotgun.

Clearly, he was panicked.

He may be extreme, but that is the behavior that is driving a lot of this.

You need nothing more than to watch some of the auctions over on Gunbroker to see what people are actually willing to pay these days.

Who's buying this all?
Those who didn't maintain a stock, are they suddenly willing to spend a couple grand to stock up, when they weren't willing to spend a couple hundred before?

Part of the problem is fear of missing out.

After a year of ammo getting more and more expensive some people are buying now out of fear prices are going to keep going up. Same reason some people buy stocks when prices are high but going up and sell them when the market has crashed and prices are low.

I just received a shipment from Outdoor Limited, and I'm reasonably happy. I purchased 250 rounds of 9mm (115gr FMJ) by MaxxTech (Made in Bosnia) for just a hair under $0.87/round - and that included <$18 for shipping. So not the best price I've ever paid but quite competitive with today's going rates that I have been able to find.

They had reloads for less and US-made stuff for more, but this was a good price for this many rounds of first-gen factory-made ammo. It also didn't make any sense to purchase any less than 250 rounds, not only based on the S/H cost but for the simple fact I needed at least that much.

I am satisfied, and will add them to my list of reliable sources.

SW got a shipment today...

150 round Win 5.56 for $104.99
20 round Win M855 for $13.99
50 round Fed/Rem/Win 9mm for $16-$18
50 round HSM .38 Spl for $28.99
250 round Aguila .22lr for $19.99

Few other super expensive 9mm SD boxes.

Picked up 4 boxes of .38spl as it's my lowest round count caliber.

A year ago, I went into the LGS and picked up have a case of 9mm for $6.99/50. Got home and told my wife and she asked why I didn't just buy a full case at that price. I responded that the next time I go in, I will. Then Covid hit. Should have listened to the wife and gone back that day. Live and learn.

I have a idea. Everyone stop buying ammo for a month just to see what happens.

With all the backorders still pending a month won't do anything. I didn't buy for nearly a year. Things got worse. Now I need it.

Sometimes you just have to pay the price.

Any time my wife advises me to buy something related to firearms, I jump on the opportunity. Sadly, there were times when I would go to a gun show with instructions of "if you see something you like, buy it" and I did not. With prices of today, if there is something I like, odds are the price is so over-inflated that I would not even entertain the thought of buying.

What I find a bit confusing is, why there continues to be a shortage?

Those of us who had maintained a stock, we're good to go. I added when I could last year at reasonable prices, but I haven't even come near using up what I already had. I'm not buying more at these prices.

Those who didn't even own a gun before, have they gone all-in and now want to be preppers?

I understand the run going into the election, but at this point I'd have figured everyone who was buying, would be done by now.

I spoke to a friend yesterday that really isn't a gun guy, he is buying all the ammo he can find for the guns he does have to hedge for future availability. Its millions of people like him that would buy one or two boxes a year are now thrown in to the mix.

I think there are a lot of factors in play that add up to an overall shortage on the shelves at this point.
In no particular order, I think we are seeing...

Private resellers trying to cash in on the shortage.

The Chinese Death Flu plandemic slowing down manufacturing output.

New owners in buying mode that have no clue what prices used to be.

Current owners buying whatever they see at whatever price and feeling lucky to pay that (look at this forum and the number of people that one would think would know better and "feel lucky" to plop down 30-40 for range fodder)

Distributor or chain LGS hold back. This gets some argument because why would they do that? Because they see prices rising as well and know that slowly releasing stock will bring increased revenue and profits. But on Friday I was in a Dunham's Sports that had about 30 boxes of Remington green and yellow box ammo on the counter for 44.95/50 going untouched. It was 38 S&W with a big sign saying "not compatible with 38 special'. Now why Vista be making that round when they could make or retool for 9mm, .38/.357, .45 ACP?

Reduced gun shows. I go to every one that is somewhat local and have for years. There was one every week between 200 and 800 tables from the Bridge to the Ohio border. There are always 10-12 large volume sellers and another dozen or so smaller ones. In Michigan, the guns shows have been postponed for nearly a year due to our Oberfuhrer's mandates and are just now beginning to resume, but with lower capacity.

OTOH, when I went to a recent gun show, whatever you wanted in most any reasonable (less than 10,000 round) quantity was there for the price.

I think we just hit the perfect storm for silly prices and low counter availability. I am seeing some little relief, but depending on what the Congresscritters pass and Joe is told to sign, it may not get much, if any, better soon.

I'm sure much of what stores receive is scooped up by those employees looking to re-sell.
Store managers should put a limit on how much they can buy monthly so we, the customers, aren't skunked out. IMO
