How much ammo do you have just laying around? Have you ever thought that time spent waiting in line to get into a gun show, or on a fruitless trip to wally world, might better be spent gathering up what you already have? I have been thinking about this this week. I started when I was going to shoot a .22 and was about to break into a new bulk pack. I remembered that I had seen two or three boxes of 50 in a drawer, so I got that instead. Then I got to thinking about other places where I know there is ammo. A quick look around revealed that I probably have several thousand rounds of .22, and hundreds of rounds of .38, .357, .45ACP, and .45 Colt "just laying around." Most of the .38/.357 is factory, all of the .45ACP is factory, and all of the .45 Colt is reloaded by me. I am on a mission the next few days. I figure I have $400-$500 worth of stuff at today's prices. I am going to gather it all up. I am going to take some plastic containers and start filling them with ammo and brass, which I also have a lot of "just laying around."
Here are a few pictures of some containers I started going through today. Note the $9.99 500 round bulk pack of Winchester .22lr. If I am not mistaken, there are a couple more of those "stuck back" somewhere.
Ninety percent of this stuff is more than 10 years old, and some of it is 30 years old. I have boxes of .38 special with five or six unfired rounds. I have a bunch of loose loaded .357 stuff that I know is at least 20 years old. What I plan to do is to get a bunch of this stuff gathered up and dispose of it. I plan to dispose of it by shooting it, of course. I figure that me and a couple more shooters can make a dent in it in a few Saturdays. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have another home with a closet and part of a bedroom with a bunch more. I have old magazines with three or four rounds of .45ACP. A couple of old range bags with who knows what. More "piece of a boxes" of .38 and .357.
