How much ammo do you have just laying around? Have you ever thought that time spent waiting in line to get into a gun show, or on a fruitless trip to wally world, might better be spent gathering up what you already have? I have been thinking about this this week. I started when I was going to shoot a .22 and was about to break into a new bulk pack. I remembered that I had seen two or three boxes of 50 in a drawer, so I got that instead. Then I got to thinking about other places where I know there is ammo. A quick look around revealed that I probably have several thousand rounds of .22, and hundreds of rounds of .38, .357, .45ACP, and .45 Colt "just laying around." Most of the .38/.357 is factory, all of the .45ACP is factory, and all of the .45 Colt is reloaded by me. I am on a mission the next few days. I figure I have $400-$500 worth of stuff at today's prices. I am going to gather it all up. I am going to take some plastic containers and start filling them with ammo and brass, which I also have a lot of "just laying around."

Here are a few pictures of some containers I started going through today. Note the $9.99 500 round bulk pack of Winchester .22lr. If I am not mistaken, there are a couple more of those "stuck back" somewhere.

Ninety percent of this stuff is more than 10 years old, and some of it is 30 years old. I have boxes of .38 special with five or six unfired rounds. I have a bunch of loose loaded .357 stuff that I know is at least 20 years old. What I plan to do is to get a bunch of this stuff gathered up and dispose of it. I plan to dispose of it by shooting it, of course. I figure that me and a couple more shooters can make a dent in it in a few Saturdays. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have another home with a closet and part of a bedroom with a bunch more. I have old magazines with three or four rounds of .45ACP. A couple of old range bags with who knows what. More "piece of a boxes" of .38 and .357.

That's funny!!!

You know we were cleaning the celler out after my dad passed away. It seemed around every corner we found another box of 22. I expect to find some in the toilet tank one day.....

Got any .300 Savage "just laying around" you can't use? :)

You're bad as me. A while back I found two cases of 5.56mm that I bought 30 years ago in my Dad's shop that I forgot about stuffed in back of the cabinet in ammo cans, mixed in with a bunch of empty ammo cans. LOL.

I also have an "all caliber box" that needs to be cleaned up. I think I will make a point of shooting it up even if it means dragging out lots of guns.....actually sounds like a fun project.

I have to smile at that! I've been trying to organise my ammo too. Was so busy over the last few years with the shop I was always grabbing some ammo on the run to go to the range, lost all organization. Now that I have some time i am trying to get things sorted and organized and all the GI cans I use for storsge are getting labeled.

Heck, I keep finding things I didn't even know I had! Almost like a treasure hunt at times, found bricks of 22's, a can full of old collector boxes of 30-40 and 30-06. All kinds of partials and single boxes too. When it warms up I think a range trip is in order!

I have some chickens laying around but all my ammo is lying around.

I did consolidate the loose stuff recently and found, as you, that there is a lot of shooting time available from the round-up without opening fresh stock.

" Note the $9.99..." I've noticed that on a box of ammo too...

... on a box of 44 mag - it's been around awhile! :)

And .22's...

... came from buying a box or two every time I went to China-Mart or where ever ammo was on sale.

Remember when ammo was "on-sale" !?!:)

Well, I organized mine, did an inventory and put it in an excell spreadsheet. Now whenever I shoot it or buy it I track it. Plus it will save my wife a lot of grief if something happens to me. All she'll have to do is take the total times whatever the going rate is and sell it at a profit. Just hope she doesnt decide to do that before I'm gone or she will be pissed on what I've spent on ammo. :)

Having all that ammo is nice but..............

looks like you will be busy for a while, sorting it all out.

Like Christmas every day, huh? Unfortunately, I take pains to keep all my ammo together, so I know what I have and where it is.
