Ammo Observation with Shield .45

You are measuring correctly the max COL is 1.275 so all of your ammo is correct. Sorry I should have looked it up and not gone by memory.

I think the Federal Champion ammo you are using is low on power. If the rounds were loaded on the light side there may not be enough powder to fully cycle your pistol. The slide is not being pushed all the way back and letting the next round come up before catching the round and shoving it down.

Load it up with some hotter ammo +P and shoot a couple boxes then if it functions fine with a hollow point +P I would bet that the Federal is under powered or light loads.

The good news is once your gun frees up it will handle the lighter rounds just fine

Hunter, you're having the same nose-dive misfeed problem that others like me have had with the 45 Shield. These misfeeds will randomly happen with all kinds of ammo if you shoot it enough. The followers are not the issue. Yes, Champion is low power ammo compared to WWB and HST but finicky 45 Shields will fail randomly like that even with HST.
Hopefully, S&W will correct this design flaw and make good on all the 45 Shields that nose-dive like yours and mine.
Check the other 45 Shield threads...you are not alone with this problem.

I have a Shield .45 that had the same problem. Let me suggest one other thing that you can try. It is simple and easy to do, and it has eliminated failures to feed with my Shield: Get some light-to-medium car polish, and lightly polish the lower feed ramp and the vertical wall below it (that's where the bullet tip is hanging up). Leave your Dremel in the box and do it by hand. I rub in a tiny amount of polish with a Q-tip, and buff it off with a cleaning patch. I do this with every cleaning, and I clean after every range session. Since I started this polishing routine, I have shot 1,000 rounds with zero failures to feed. And that is with the old-style followers. I'm guessing that this works because the smoother, slicker lower feed ramp area allows the bullet tips to slide by.

Good Luck!
