Based on this thread I decided to do a little cruising today. First stop was one of the K-Marts. There was no handgun ammo. I found out from talking to a woman working in the sporting goods department that they quit carrying that about the same time they quit carrying guns (approximately 5 years ago). There was a variety of rifle calibers on clearance (270 Winchester, 7mm mag and 300 Winchester mag) priced anywhere from $14 to $20 for a box of 20. She said it was due to "age" (does ammo have a shelf life?). I tried to wrangle a deal on .22 ammo since it was the only stuff not on clearance but she wouldn't budge.
Next stop was Walmart. They carry a wide range of everything, but very little of it was in stock. What they did have was fairly pricey.
Last stop was Meijer's. This was the only place where the ammo was in an aisle (the other two stores had all of theirs stashed behind a counter). Shotgun shells were there for the handling. Other calibers, mostly handgun, were in a locked glass case but at least I could get up close and personal and read the boxes, even without my new glasses. Prices weren't great but they weren't bad. In a pinch I could've got some 100 round Winchester white box in 9mm or .38. Still would've set me back $25 to $30 but at least they had it in stock, along with .357, .40 and .45 at now astronomical prices for a 50 round box.
And that's the scoop from my neck of the woods.
