Hi all
Just joined this forum.
I've got a bunch 'o glocks and decided to expand outward and picked up a Shield 9mm. Curious if anyone has ammo recommendations for this gun. I normally use Gold Dot 124+p in my Glocks. However, I also use some 124 standard pressure and occasionally some 147. Would really appreciate if anyone could weigh in on whether there's a self-defense load that has proven very reliable and well suited to the Shield
Thanks
Cnut

So far my shield has fed everything reliably. I carry Federal HST 124gr standard pressure, and have shot a couple of hundred rounds of it without a hitch.

Gold Dot Short Barrel 9mm shoots well out of Shields. There are online gel tests for this out of the Shield, it performs great out of a 3" barrel. Check them out.

I just shot my second Shield 9 today and both are reliable with the self defense loads I have on hand. Those loads are 124gr. HST +P, 124gr. PDX-1 +P, 147gr. Gold Dot standard pressure and 115gr. Remington UMC standard pressure.

Of course the UMC is accurate because it's low recoil, but the second best would be the Gold Dots, third the PDX-1 and finally the HST. That's only that particular model since the HST is actually the best in accuracy out of my Glocks and Beretta 92s.

I'd say take what you have on hand, test each of them at the range, see which one is most accurate and carry it.

Howdy from Ohio...good to have you in the house!

Your Shield will chew up and spit out anything you give it. I EDC it with Speer Gold Dots 124 +p. I've also been satisfied with Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr +p. I don't think you can go wrong with the proven winners out there that stood the test of time and ballistic study.

Hello from Ohio...too! I've shot several brands of target ammo thru my Shiled 9 w/out issue and also shot and carry Hornady 135g +P (must be an Ohio thing). The +P Hornady has a little more kick but very managable and accurate. I enjoy shooting this little pistol as much as my Glocks.

Enjoy!

Online gel tests show the hornady critical duty to be less than ideal from shield. The critical defense looks better for the really short barrels. The short barrel or regular gold dot is shown in videos working nicely in ballistic gelatin. You have to decide if you want the +P kick.

So far my shield has eatin every bullet type and weight I have put in it. As far as SD ammo I carry the standard 124gr gold dots. I have shot the Hornady Critical duty 135+p's in it without issue. But keep them for my fullsize guns.

Our two 9mm Shields feeds everything and we pack them with Ranger 147gr(formerly Black Talons). I don't trouble to load with a +p load in these short barreled weapons as the added kick and minor gain in velocity is not worth the added cost or recoil.

There are plenty of strings in the forum discussing service ammo for the Shield and other 9mm platforms. There are a couple of us who repeatedly link to Gary Roberts' ammo recommendations, for good reason. Pick one of those rounds, test adequately for reliable function (200 rounds minimum, 500 preferable), clean the pistol at the end of the test, load it, carry it.

That's my choice as well ... although it's difficult to find during this period of panic buying. :(

My shield 9mm with over 2,800 trouble free rounds (literally not ONE single malfunctuion)

My EDC ammo is as follows:
1) Federal HST 124 +P
2) Speer GDHP 124 grain +P
3) Winchester T-Series 124 grain +P

In that order and the ONLY reason I choose the HST over the God Dot is that its slightly more accurate (slightly).
But all these rounds will serve you well. I also heard the Rem Golden Sabre's do well, But i find those hard to come by.

So far I've shot some ball ammo and some Hornady critical defense plus a few others...everything works perfect...not one problem...
