Ammo Question

Found this old inert rifle round. Case size is the same as a .30-06. Bullet is copper jacket lead core.

My question is about the fluted case. What's the purpose of the flutes?

Also, anyone have any idea what firearm this round may have been intended for?

Here's the case head. I can see a 4 and 3 at the bottom and an A at the top. Can't make out that other character at the top.

If you ever tried to load that case, pressures would skyrocket. I wonder if anyone tried...there's always that "one guy".
