Ammo Question

Found this old inert rifle round. Case size is the same as a .30-06. Bullet is copper jacket lead core.



My question is about the fluted case. What's the purpose of the flutes?

Also, anyone have any idea what firearm this round may have been intended for?

Here's the case head. I can see a 4 and 3 at the bottom and an A at the top. Can't make out that other character at the top.

Flutes, I'm guessing to indicates it's a dummy inert cartridge for quick visual identification.

Dummy, M40: This cartridge is used for training. The cartridge has six longitudinal corrugations and there is no primer.

OP's cartridge originated from the Frankford Arsenal. A U.S. military facility that opened it's doors in 1812 and closed down in 1977. This facility has a great history.

If you ever tried to load that case, pressures would skyrocket. I wonder if anyone tried...there's always that "one guy".
