I went into a local Academy store today solely to buy a hunting license but I walked through the ammunition section where I saw a solitary box of .35 Whelen hunting ammunition which I snatched off the shelf immediately (it's death on feral hogs so I never want to run out) and then I looked further and there were dozens of boxes of Winchester 5.56 green tip target ammunition available and a somewhat lesser number of 7.62 x 39 which I only noticed because they were right next to the .223.
The Winchester 5.56 was priced at around ten dollars so that's 50 cents a round.
Then, as an aside because this was mostly intended to let folks know about the ammunition, I walked over to the gun counter and they were certainly not bereft of handguns. But they were not overloaded, either. There was probably a couple of dozen, including SIG's new compact 9mm, several S&W pistols in varying "sizes", a couple of small revolvers, and some Tauri in varying sizes as well. Looked like MSRP, more or less, on all of them.
On the back wall there some hunting rifles and shotguns and I only saw one AR-platform rifle.
So, if you're in Dallas, now you know.
