Ammo

Just avoid steel cased ammo in a revolver.

With the Wolf I used, the case expands in the cylinder,

making extraction difficult.

If there's a gun that can handle steel ammo it's a revolver.

I have been in a face to face with a big black bear. It had a radio collar on, stole my food bag and came back for me. We were 6 miles in the new season for campers.

Long story short, the angry bear took my food and ran across a 10 foot wide shallow stream and up a hill. I chased it all the way to the stream. It came back down pissed all to hell.
Across the 10 foot stream we stood, me chucking rocks and sticks at the bear as it tried to cross the stream. It was 5:30 PM and getting dark fast. This bear was angry and at times on its back legs making all kinds of noise.

So it had enough of the rocks and it started across at me. I pulled my S&W Model 65 loaded with 158gr PMC 357 mags and fired off a warning shot into the stream bed. The gun went 'click'! WTH! I had a factory dud from PMC. Darn those Koreans!

The bear watched me as it was half way across, about 12 feet away. I lowered the front sites to its left ear and readied for 5 quick shots to its head, noise and eyes.

Just before enough pressure to the trigger, the big bear backed off and went back up hill to my food. I ran back to camp and throw everything into my sleeping bag and ran up the other hill to the trail. I looked back and saw the bear run back down hill to my campsite.

6 miles in the dark, lost the trail twice, crossed two large ice cold streams and found my car. Safe.

Did I do all the smart things? No. Was I under gunned? Yes. I did my best I could kept my head and acted fast, and got home alive. Would I do it again? Yes I did and but now with my S&W 629 5" 44 mag with 300gr hardcast Hammerhead Bullets.

I have enjoyed backpacking most of my life here in the USA and all over the world. Life is fun and exciting.

By the way Independence brand ammo is repackaged IMI

When I called Federal, they told me they send all Federal components to IMI for them to assemble and package under the Independence label.

Glad you didn't end up being bear dinner.
Here's my analysis:
1. " We were 6 miles in the new season for campers." - If the bears are having their season for campers, don't go camping. Stay in a hotel.
2. "Across the 10 foot stream we stood, me chucking rocks and sticks at the bear as it tried to cross the stream. It was 5:30 PM and getting dark fast. This bear was angry and at times on its back legs making all kinds of noise." - I used google translate on the bear noises. Here's what they mean in English - "Quit throwing rocks at me or I'll kick your ***."
3. "I chased it all the way to the stream." - We can't all be Vladimir Putin. Don't chase bears.

Hey I was young, unmarried and hungry for my food...

Dude - 1) Hotels are for married men on vacation.
2) I dropped my 'bear translater' in the stream.
3) Putin would have caught the bear and kicked its butt.

And this tread was all about PMC ammo!

If have recently picked up a rifle and are trying to determine what plinking ammo it shoots best Cabelas has a ton of specials this weekend with 10% off and free shipping over $99.

This a a great opportunity to pick up a couple hundred rounds of multiple brands for your new rifle. PPU, IMI, PMC, Norma and Armscor. Only quality plinking rounds missing from the list are AE and Wolf Gold. I personally like the IMI and PPU at this price.

The Norma TAC USA is also intriguing at $7.49 before the discount. I believe this has the ULM proofhouse stamp on the brass which would mean its made in Germany. They are owned by RAUG who makes high quality ammo in Switzerland, Germany and Hungry under various brand names like RWS, Geco, Raug, Norma etc...

They all are selling for $6.99 to $7.19 per 20 rounds. You can mix and match to get your self over the $99 and get it shipped free. For example 300 rounds of IMI 55Gr 223 for $7.19 a box. 15 boxes ends up being $97.05 shipped!
