I am now an owner of a 9 MM S & W Shield pistol. I am wanting to buy good quality ammunition for concealed carry and for practice. I would appreciate some recommendations on where to buy the ammunition. Thanks.

I recommend the Federal HST 9mm 147gr. I run that out of any barrel length 9mm intended for serious business.

My wife and I have shot over 500 rounds of Federal 9mm through her Shield. They come in 100 round boxes for less than $26 at Walmart. We use either Hornady CD or Winchester PDX1 for self defense rounds which are also carried by Walmart.

You might try Gander Mountain. They have a gun and ammo sale going, and they've got UMC 9mm 250 pks for $69.99. (at least that's what they have on them here in MN. Not the world's greatest ammo, but it goes bang. If you can get Federal or Winchester from Walmart you might be better off.

Do you have any local shops that sell ammo? For self defense ammo I wouldn't bother with Walmart. They seldom carry anything worth while. Get Speer Gold dot or Winchester Rangers or the new Federal bonded.....I think it's DPX?!?!

Thanks to all who answered my post. I will check all this good info. out. We do have a local gun shop in Gettysburg, Pa. I will check this one out first. I don't want any cheap ammo., I am just looking for the best quality that will give me the best service.

I agree, Winchester Ranger 147gr hollow point for self defence. very accurate. Check you tube for ballistics reviews and see for yourself. For SD they will do the job. I believe they are what use to be Black Tallon

For practice ammo, WWB or Federal at Walmart. For defence, there is ALOT of good ones like Remington Golden Saber, Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defence, Winchester PDX1, Speer Gold Dot, Barnes Tac-XPD. Depending how recoil sensitive you are, you will feel a difference between different bullet weights and +p with the Shield. Try a few of the ones mentioned. Go heavier and hotter +p for the winter months or for woods carry. The 115 is better suited for summer carry. I get my good ammo at Sportsmans Guide of where I see it competitvly priced.

The Shield will eat about anything. If it doesn't, it needs adjusted by S&W.

Get some 115g brass case FMJ at WalMart or discount sporting good stores. It's about $15 for 50 rounds. Practice with this until your pistol has 2-300 rounds through it and/or you are getting consistent results. Then start experimenting with hollow point self-defense rounds. Some work better than others with regard to reliability AND performance in your specific handgun.

These ammo discussions are always difficult. As stated, just use 115 grain for target ammo. Work on the gun and your technique, then try the ammo you may want to carry. I personally use PDX1 which is 147 grain bonded hollow point. I love the way it cycles in both of my shields and it's my preferred ammo. It's not everyone's first choice so pick what best suites your needs.

welcome to the forum. Anything but WWB for practice. Speer gold dots 124g+p for sd. Gold dots can usually be found at most gun shops. I've put 500rds+ of them through my shield9 with zero malfunctions.
