With the ongoing gun control “debate”, I was directed to a documentary on Prime. “Speed demons...Dying for attention”.
Done by a group called MedWatch.

With a lot of research, documentation and screen shots of medical examiners reports, this flick establishes the presence of prescription amphetamines in the blood of most all the young serial killers we’ve seen,(including Richard Whitman, 1966 UT tower shootings) and also in numerous homicide arrests that don’t make the screaming headlines.

My takeaway.... it ain’t the violent videos, or the way momma sat them on the potty ( and it isn’t the guns).

It’s the chemicals that the pharmaceutical companies have been pushing in schools and doctors offices.

The latest promotion? If you don’t have “Adult attention disorder” or “Binge eating disorder” here’s a new one that the pharmaceutical industry is just starting to advertise:
SCR that’s “Sluggish Cognitive Response” ( I’m serious)!:rolleyes:
and of course the med for that is amphetamine.

Might be a "Which came first, chicken, egg" argument, since warriors have been using speed since WWII, looking to increase performance.
Of course the drug companies can do no wrong.

Ritalin and Adderall, which are both stimulants, and thus, I assume, amphetamines, are commonly prescribed for children diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) nowadays.

But I think most kids diagnosed with ADHD today are simply kids with what earlier generations called behavioral problems. Can’t sit still. Can’t concentrate on school work. Etc.

My second son, now a high school teacher, was like that. He was a handful, somewhat of a problem child in school, and focussing was hard for him. I think nowadays the docs would try to stuff him full of drugs to quiet him down. Thank goodness that was not the practice back in the day.

We all need to learn discipline and focus to be successful in life. While it’s harder for some children, I don’t think that’s a reason to drug them.

Yes. Some legitimate medical uses for amphetamines/stimulants include the treatment of ADHD, morbid obesity, narcolepsy, etc. Some of the more common medications include Ritalin, Adderall, Provigil, etc.

Thank you for the response. This is not something I would bother to research, but I had never heard anything positive about amphetamines. Good to know there are legitimate uses.

The Old Man left a list of things for us to do headed by the phrase "These things will be accomplished when I arrive home this evening." This was backed up by a J.C. Penny belt.

As bigwheelzip already mentioned, the “greatest generation” was popping bennies like candy. You decide how positive that was ;)

The Nazis did one better, by the way. The Wehrmacht (and the civilian black market) ran on crystal methamphetamine in tablet form, synthesized by the German chemical company Temmler under the trade name Pervitin.

You misunderstood my post. I was referring to legitimate usage. "Popping bennies like candy" isn't a legitimate use, whether prescribed by a physician or not.

Not just the Germans, the US also passed them out pretty regulary before extended operations/battles.

Of course, not quite like the Nazis, who had a DIY formula right in the field manual if the tablets ran out.

The German troops called the stimulants they got "Panzerschokolade"-Panzer chocolate, and they thanked them for much of their success in the Battle of France in 1940. Conversely a lot of Uncle Sam's boys who served in Vietnam were very vocal-and bitter-about the lack of energy boosters they got and the attitude of their superiors that rest-and sleep-were optional activities and the mark of a goof-off.
I heard an account by an AF pilot, flying aircraft to the zone of operations in the First Gulf War-17 hours-he said they were issued them under VERY controlled circumstances. You were issued it and you took it in the presence of the issuing officer.
Properly used, under careful supervision, these things can do some good, but obviously the temptation to abuse them is too great. "Ay, and there's the rub" as that famous British writer said.
 
When I first went out with my back , medically retired Dec. 1998 , they sent me to a pain specialist .He had me on so much stuff , it seemed I was getting a UPS delivery 2-3 times a week . I use IWP , which overnights your meds . Anyways , fast forward , and I was really dragging . Of course , here , take this . He ended up dying and W/C sent me to a new pain doc , a younger guy . He looked at what I was taking and erased 3/4 of it . I was dragging in the morning and asked about the one drug . He told me NO WAY should you be taking this stuff , it was a generic Ritalin , no wonder it made me feel good . I learned a hard lesson , don't trust Doctors , at least with meds . First thing I do when I get a prescription is go to a web site and check it out . What are the side effects , interactions with other drugs ? Stuff you don't think about when you're young . Add in a parent that sees their child suffering and a Dr. says have him/her take this and they will be ok , and it gets to be a vicious circle . I'm not advocating not going to a Dr. or refusing meds , it's just I've learned the hard way , to question and do your research . Sorry if this has been long , but after my experiences I just feel strongly about this .

One last thing . A good friend is a GP , if there is such a thing anymore . He told me your average Dr. has a list of 10 meds he dispenses . He/she feels comfortable with them and that's what he gives out .

Have you ever sat in a Dr. office when a drug rep comes in . The receptionist bends over backwards for them , they know they are going to get a free lunch or breakfast out of them along with other freebies . Of course the Dr. is going to dispense their drugs , that's how it works . No wonder we have children , teens and young people with problems .

1)Ah yes, Methylphenidate. Who gives Ritalin to a grownup.

2) Pffft, breakfast, lunch. I once gave $3,000 to a large group for a Christmas party, no strings attached. Well 15% of the 3,000 Rx's per month the group wrote of drugs "in class." Starting at zilch, I got 300-400/ month (depending on time of year) @ $90 (avg. whlse. price) per, enough for a $10K bonus (that I kept $6050 after Uncle Surcharge).
Good news: The business is "cleaned up", no more give aways. When's the last time you got a "Morbootya" pen? Joe
 
My son has been Dx w A.D.D.
No H.
We have decided to run him, instead of medicate him.
The pediatrician recommended him to stay active.
He loves and plays soccer four days a week.
And His Grades and Attitude have improved.

Just Not a big fan of Pharms

They never got "kickbacks." That's illegal, like giving $3k for a Christmas party. But we did pay $1- 2K for Preceptorships where the doc spent an hour telling a group of reps how great he/she is over a spendy meal at Morton's or Ruth's Chris. We had "trainings" for them in Aruba or Hawaii to launch a new drug. I once took 16 docs to TM Ranch, a very spendy and out of business local Sporting Clays venue that cost my "pod" about $6K (split a dozen lunch budget ways) to listen to a "thought leader" (that we flew in from Texas and paid big$$$) brag about our "new pill" during the lunch break between rounds. And........you get the picture. Again, kickbacks are illegal. I've been out for over 13 years so anything I've said came off the dusty shelf in my head and should be beyond that "statute of limitations." Joe
 
The definition of "kickback" seems to be ever widening. Some doctors won't even take samples any longer because they are afraid of being accused of taking a kickback.

I'll just say that there is a lot of ignorance in this thread.

The abuse, which includes prescribing mood altering psychotropics to children in order to keep them “tame”, is traced to psychotic breaks. Do you think there were no commonality to the fact that some people behave dangerously under the influence of these psychotropic / stimulants to insane behavior?
Read the label. It’s in the warnings. On the packaging. In the blood analysis of the killers.
Is there a difference between the chemical when it’s in the bloodstream whether it was prescribed or bought off the street wrapped in tinfoil?
I suggest that the timeframe of the young people going off their rockers had nothing to do with the presence of firearms, because we’ve always had firearms....but we only recently began supplying them to children with developing bodies.

Guns don’t make you crazy. Drugs definitely make people crazy.

The FDA approves. The drug companies have lobbyists.

My point is that the blood analysis shows the presence of psychotropics in the killers. Whether they were over prescribed or never prescribed is irrelevant. It’s evidence.

And Ritalin is definitely a central nervous system stimulant.
“Methylphenidate may cause new or worsening psychosis (unusual thoughts or behavior), especially if you have a history of depression, mental illness, or bipolar disorder.“
 
Seen some strange things from drug use and believe that they can definitely alter people’s perceptions and actions. Abuse of prescription drugs is a huge problem and the people abusing them don’t necessarily know they are abusing.
