an Issue with my new 629-1....

I recently bought a 629-1 and its in pretty good shape, the lockup is tight, and it shoots great, however when pulling the trigger in DA, I realized I didn't hear the 2 distinct clicks you normally hear. It will do it sometimes, but not consistently. When it doesn't make the 2nd click, I can take the cylinder and just barely touch it and the cylinder stop will engage. What do I need to do to correct this problem, because I feel like if the cylinder stop is not securely seated in the cylinder I could end up shaving some lead and damaging my gun.....

start with a good cleaning, including the notches on the cylinder. you may have to replace the hand to advance the timing, check for excessive endshake.

After you thoroughly clean it and the problem continues, call S&W. The gun may be covered under warranty (1989 or later). You can give them the serial number over the phone to them to find out. They pay shipping both ways and fix the problem.

I just got off the phone with S&W today, and they told me the gun is not under warranty as the warranty did end in 89 as you said, and the 629-1 was manufactured prior to 89.....So how hard is it to fit an oversized cylinder stop? I already tried cleaning it good and it did not fix the problem.

the cylinder stop is not the problem, most likely it needs a new hand. a standard size may fix the problem, if not, an oversize one will have to be fitted. excessive endshake can also cause timing problems since the cylinder is slightly forward resulting in poor line-up of the cylinder stop and the notches on the cylinder.

If I recall, I think they said they are putting a new cylinder stop in my S&W 57 right now.

I got my estimate back and had a bunch of repair and services on there and for less that 100 bucks. I don't know where your udget is, but for the price, I don't think they are too bad.
