And in those days, the .45 was King...

It's not the pistol: an out of the rack 45 is amply accurate for any combat situation, no matter how much it rattles. It's the shooter: if you can't shoot a pistol well, you're going to miss.

I had much the same experience with USN .45s. They shot well enough for me.

Well myself I much prefer the 45 over the 9mm but this is my personal preference. Either one will kill you. I once read an article that stated for self defense use the largest caliber you can handle properly. For assassination use a smaller caliber in a throw away gun.

The idea here is that the intruder is probably on drugs or is angry or whatever and will be harder to stop. In regards to the assassination aspect this person doesn't know it is coming so you put the gun up close and shoot then throw it down and beat feet away.

The only way to guarantee stopping an intruder is maybe a hand grenade or a little C-4. I guess a couple of strategically placed Claymores would work pretty well too.:D

These Days it Still is.

My favorite handgun caliber.

Mild recoil and plenty accurate in my hands.

.40S&W is a distant second.

An interesting read on pistol calibers:

FBI 10mm Notes
I base my decisions on the above over other psuedo-scientific studies.

I have a 625 that was shipped as a .45 Colt. Had the cylinder machined to accept 45 moon clips and can now also shoot .45 ACP's in it. With handloads both shoot to same POA. Also have a Gold Cup in .45...I love the .45 in any flavor.

Folks, carry what you want. Caliber really isn't all that important.

I've never done a lengthy study other than saying "Hmmm....." when seeing people shot with everything from .22's to .45's, but my unscientific observations tell me I'd rather have a .45 than a .22 when my life depends on being able to make someone stop trying to kill me. Caliber and bullet choice is only third and fourth to sound judgment and being able to put them where you want them when necessary.

45's RULE

I can't believe this debate still continues. to say a 9mm will req a second shot is just not true. a miss with a 45 or 500S&W would req another shot also. and a well placed shot from a 22 & up could be a 1 shot fight stopper. it all comes down to the shooters ability to place it. I am far from a 45acp hater. I believe, hit the music, JOHN MOSES BROWNINGS 1911 to be the finest pistol ever designed. and feel extremely well armed when carrying a 45. luckily I own way more than 1 handgun and 1 caliber and carry diff guns/ calibers for diff conditions, needs, dress, weather, terrain, or just if i'm in a certain mood or on a whim.

BLACK TALONS

THE MOST OVER RATED HYPED UP HANDGUN BULLET EVER? correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the BT's simply a Winchester ranger with a diff color head in a fancy box? that won't perform significantly diff, or even as well as many others. and a lawyer will fry your azz for using them simply because of the name. sorry but BT's and Leverevolutions are a pet peeve of mine.

.

The whole deal on the Winchester Ranger 'Black Talon' was a teflon coated bullet to reduce copper fouling in the bore.

It (coated bullet) jest so happened to be slick and was reported to be able to slip though soft body armor.......

I've never saw that happen, but the bullet did expand as advertized....The Winchester Ranger ammunition that

I carry and bet my life on everyday is the same design without the teflon coating.

Oh BTW, I'm the lead investigator for the DA's office, and I have never even heard of an ammunition type
being an issue during prosecution of a case.

It might play into the interests of a civil suit....With some of the more zealous lawyer types.

But, each to his own devises.............
