How's the fishing so far this year?

I haven't been in some time. Not enough water in this state recently.

Considering going down to the Texas City dyke in a couple of weeks to play cat and mouse with the redfish for my birthday. I got a new .380 for my birthday last year, this year all I want is Mr. Wrench to take me fishing.

Hmmm, up here in Ohio, it didn't get cold enough for decent ice fishing, but we're still a good month to month and a half till the walleye start running. Pond fishing is a good 2+ months off.

The Over the Hill gang and I are headed to Amistad week after next. It's only down 17 feet but I've fished there when it has been 40 feet low. After all a lot of the lake is over 100 feet deep when full. It's the prettiest lake in Texas in my opinion.

I quit boats and fishing a while back. Used to be incredible here.
Inshore Trifecta. Snook, Reds, Spotted Seatrout. Snapper used to be great also. Tarpon is still good but big bucks to fish successfully.

Now it's just idiots, poor water quality, over fished, loss of habitat (aka Development)too many regulations, costs too much, to any LEO agencies doing "safety checks", slow speed zones for Manatees, closed seasons, size limits, bring your Lawyer with you.

Other than that let me tell you how I really feel.

Tounament on Santee-Cooper last weekend,5 fish limit,paid first 5 places. It took 29 pounds to get a check. Four boats over 30 pounds. First big fish was 9-11,second was 9-8. Not too shabby.

The lakes up in the panhandle of Texas are in bad shape from lack of rain as are many in the state. Ute Lake in N.M. pretty good fishing. Conchas lake in N.M. is real low but fishing ok. Lake Greenbelt at Clarendon only has 1 ramp usable. I am at Lake Medina now and it is 54' low, fishing so so if you can get in the water. Raining right now, some water in the Medina River since middle of Jan. and 3 pretty good rains. No rain up home. I know the lakes up around Dallas have recovered pretty good. Pray for rain for Texas for sure.
Looks like I gave you a lake report instead of a fishing report don't it? Oh well.

I'm taking my kids to the coast next week to try the bay fishing and crabbing. We'll be in the Matagorda bay area. I haven't been able to get a decent fishing report, but it doesn't matte - we're going anyway!

It surprises me to hear that from a married woman like you. A dIke is an earthen berm, as along a river. A dYke is another matter altogether (no jokes about Dutch boys here, please).

That's all just by the by. I am really posting about fishing. I don't fish much, but I sure love to eat some fresh fish. My BIL is up on Lake of the Woods right now, and says the ice is plenty thick to get out to the good spots. One thing about my BIL, when he sets out to catch some fish, he gets a lot. No catch and release; if they don't go right in the pan, they go in the freezer. So I am looking forward to a pile of fresh walleye sometime about the middle of next week.

Still too much ice in the creeks for me to fish.
Trout season doesn't start on most creeks and rivers till a month and a
half from now anyway.

We had some warm weather a while ago. I thought about fishing
the river mouths that are open all year and that brought on two
snowstorms and 12 degree weather. I won't think about it again
for a while.

I would wait until warmer weather. It gets mighty cold on the TCD with that cold wind blowing. Good luck though. Hope you catch a bunch.

I'll know tomorrow how the fishing is on East Lake Toho. A buddy recently made me a deal I couldn't refuse on a Ranger Bass Boat that I've been restoring on the weekends. It's ready now and I'll be on the lake at dawn. Over the years I've pulled some Bass out of that lake that tastes like filet mignon.

We've been fishing private lakes and ponds on warm days since January. (80 one day, below freezing the next) Of the three times we went we caught 26,29, and 32 large mouth bass. There were three of us. They weighed from 1 1/2 lb. to 4 lb. I've got a "honey hole" for bream but we won't do that until about the middle of April. The last time Louisiana Joe and I went there we left them biting at 150 because it takes too much beer to clean more than that. As the weather warms up and the winds die down some it will be time for some saltwater fishing.

When I was a youngster... we used to go by the store and buy frozen fish before we went to the lake... just in case we couldn't buy any beer.

Sven took the day off and left Ole in charge of the bait shop. After a while, a Suburban pulled up and five Texans got out. They came in, asked about the fishing, what kind of bait was working, etc. Ole told them they would be needing some night crawlers, and of course, and ice ax. After explaining how to use the ice ax, he took their money and the Texans went on their way. After about an hour, one of the Texans comes back in and wants to buy four more ice axes. Ole asks, "Can't the five of you share an ax?" The Texan replied, "We been takin' turns, but we just now got the boat in the water. It'll take all day to get out to the middle of the lake."

I hadn't fished since I was a kid and started again a couple of years ago as a stress-reliever. Works like a charm and I really enjoy getting out just before daybreak and playing with the bass and bluegill.

The farm pond I frequent here in central Indiana doesn't produce real large fish, but the enjoyment is huge!

I cannot believe I made that error...but there IS a great song about the Texas City Dyke, which cracks me up, yes it IS about that other matter, and since I was listening to it recently, probably accounts for my error.

I talked to my brother today, and it looks like he is in for some fishing. If I ply him with enough beer, perhaps he will entertain the notion of selling me his S&W 9mm.

You're right and they were using ice picks!
The saltwater fishing in Louisiana has been great the last couple of years. Lots of Speckled Trout and Redfish. This morning I was talking to a guy who took his brand new, virgin, 31' catamaran offshore Monday, they caught several Wahoo, the largest 109 lbs!
