Can anyone recommend an ankle holster that you like for an M&P Bodyguard .38 revolver ? It has a Crimson Trace laser if that makes a difference.

Carry 649 in mine.

I use the open top Galco with the knee strap to prevent it from riding on my ankle. I also learned to wear knee high socks to ensure day length comfort for the knee strap. To me, the ankle holster also works great in the car.

the new 'Renegade' from The Wilderness - been using them on my j frames for over 20 years.

I called them and tried to get them to send me a pic of their current version but to no avail...on their site they have a few different pics of the Renegade... The first pic has too much material below the band and I feel it would chew up your shoes. the second to last pic is an exact copy of the original Renegade but someone at the company said that new version was a bit different. Since I could not get a straight answer (with a pic) of what I would be getting, I decided to go to the Galco. If you decide to go with the new Renegade, I would love to see a pic when you get it....:)

I use a Desantis 044 S1 is for J frame BodyGuard/ Centennial style revolvers exclusively. The strap the goes over the hammer is not suited for model 36, 37, 60s and all hammered variants. I use this all the time with my 649, 638, 38. I don't know about the CT. It (should) work but I can't guarantee it. Only / by far the best ankle rig I have found. I wish I could find one like it for hammered models. Its got a very nice pad that helps with comfort and stability.

Check out the K L Null ankle rig. If I was to try that again, that's the one I would buy. Back when I was full time as a State Trooper, I carried a M60 in a calf sleeve that Safariland made at one time. It was a neoprene sleeve with a holster slot on the inside. Very comfortable, but not very fast access. I wish now that I still had it.

It may be blasphemous, but the Uncle Mike's Ankle Holster, Size 0, has worked well for me with a Model 37 and a Model 642-2. For comfort, I wear a thin knee high sock with the holster and calf strap over it. I then wear my black crew sock pulled up over the holster and folded over to the top of the cylinder. I don't use the thumb break straps since in four years neither gun has even wiggled, and it takes a determined yank to get the gun out. An Airweight S&W goes almost unnoticed by the wearer (me), and no one else has ever tumbled to the sock-covered holster.

That said, I really don't like ankle holsters.

The advise about wearing a sock over the holster is well founded. Every time you sit down your trouser cuff rides up and over the holster, revealing it. I know b/c it's happened to me and it could be embarrassing.

Wearing a sock over your ankle holster also helps reduce any damage it might do to your shoe. I wear Bates 5" ankle boots, and the UM Cordura would eat the faux leather pad around the top. But, as you say, it hides the holster very well.

Can't speak for the bodyguard, but I use a Desantis Apache for my Glock 26. Great holster. I wear it over my 8" Bates on duty. Holds gun well, stays put, and holds up well. Worn it at least 40 hours a week for over 4 years now.

Finally had the time to snap a few pics.
This first picture shows two of the old Renegade versions. The open top J frame and a thumb break auto rig for my Sig P290. They've seen several years of daily use and are starting to show the wear. The picture isn't that good, but you can start seeing the material stretch and even a few rubber bands starting to pop out. Still very functional, just well used.

Next is the *** - this was the last order I received from the old lady on the phone for Renegade a few years ago. I wanted one for my J frame with a cover strap for duty use. It literally arrived in the condition shown and smelled of cigarette smoke when I opened the package. It hasn't been worn a day - it arrived this way. By the time I called to complain and ask for a refund, they had stopped answering their phone. Here it sits....ugh...

So, now on to the new items made and offered up by The Wilderness. I was in Phoenix last month, so I stopped in the store and ended up talking with Ralph - the owner. We chatted over the old Renegade company, how they came to take over the model and apparently we had the same experiences with the remaining old products from the previous owner - smoke smell, worn out last scrap items, etc. He explained their new product, how it's made and even a few improvements. Anyway, I walked out with a new J frame rig and a new medium auto rig for my P290. Here's the new stuff...
Up top is the J frame and below is the auto rig with a newly designed retention strap - more in a bit...

As you can see, the excess holster below the leg wrap is not there, the fit is excellent and there's an added pull tab on the outside of the holster to help in reholstering.

Each holster has an extra piece of velcro to secure the wrap. I've never needed it, but Ralph stated that many customers asked for it.

The inside is well stitched and comfortable as ever.

Now to the new design on the auto holsters - they come in S, M, L, XL. This one is a Med and holds my P290 very well. We actually test fit it in the store first. At first it appears to ride very high, but once it's on, it balances and feels great. It allows for a strong grip to be obtained prior to pulling it out. Also, the new retention strap has two positions. The one shown is for normal use and you literally just flick it forward, grab the gun and go. It's very secure and comes off very quick. The more secure position if wanted, is to pull it back past the rear of the slide and onto the grip/beavertail area of the pistol. In this position, you must grasp the tap, pull up and off, then grab your pistol. In that position (not shown), it's extremely secure if that's what your wanting.

Anyway, hope that clears things up a bit. The new products offered by The Wilderness are leaps and bounds better than what Renegade offered up the past few years. They ran between $65-80 depending on which model.

I wonder how one of these rigs would work for a 642 as I wear Cowboy Boots most of the time. The 642 does not fit in my blue jeans pocket and I want to carry it as my BUG

Thanks for the pics. Now that I see that the holster ends at the band (unlike the pic on their site) I would not hesitate to order one. I do like the Galco but I am so used to the Renegade that I know I would be happier with the Wilderness. One thing I do notice is that the original gives you a better grip on the gun from the holster. I see the strap is gone but I guess it's not really needed anyway. And I hope the nylon pouch holds up as well as the leather...my pouch is still in great shape after 15 years even though the elastic band and strap are showing their age....:)
