Another 28-2 thread

There is a 99.9% chance that model 28-2 has been refinished. There are remarkably few factory nickel plated Model 28's. The greatest number are the rare, 5 inch barrel versions made for the Florida Highway Patrol. Twenty-five were made and marked "FHP", and I understand that there are fakes. Supposedly another 5 Model 28's were factory nickel plated and were supplied as sales examples, the barrel lengths are unknown. It is possible that a few individuals did manage to order their Model 28's with a nickel finish as S&W used to do such things if you were willing to pay for it.

That’s my understanding as well, they’re as rare as hens teeth. Specifics of how many and what year I can’t remember but I knew it’s a very small number not quite 28-1 small but very hard to find nonetheless. Thanks for the info!

This one has been on GB for a while. I don't see any negatives but the price. If it was lower, as I think it should be, I would probably have it now. Shiny nickel doesn't thrill me, but satin and brushed, well, I have a lot of guns with that finish.

Just a moment...

I looked, I do not think that is a nickel finish. Looks like hard chrome to me and that explains the very faint turn line on the cylinder. Hard chrome is very durable and provides a corrosion resistant, hard surface. Looking at the picture of the forcing cone, that Model 28 has been shot a lot and with full power ammo, possibly a lot of 125 grain full power ammo. I see what appears to be significant erosion around the forcing cone.

Bought my 6" in 1981, very good price. Looked for a 4" for years-had to settle for a 4" nickled M-27.
Any M-28 in good condition-good bore especially-is worth it.

I’m sure that nickel 27 filled the void nicely! I think the prices have finally started to catch up to how nice the 28s are.

Just got my grips back from Don Furr, he was able to repair both of the chipped of corners and fix some of the busted out border around the checkering. I think they fit the look of the gun much better now.

Thanks I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but figured Don deserved the publicity. I’ll get some pics of the others soon

That gap is not all that unusual on targets.

If there in an N stamped on the left grip frame and rear of the cylinder you hit the big lotto. Likely a refinish though.

With original target grips on N-frame guns the gap never looks like that.........Also your grips do not fit at the shoulders.........Appears you have K FRAME grips on a N FRAME gun.....That's what they usually look like when they are wrong.

I just tried them on a model 10-10(only post war K frame I have here that I want to take the grips off of) and they didn’t fit, they seem to be too big. The dowel pin on the N frame lines up with the target grips.

I've posted this before, but this is a lettered 28-2 factory nickel which sold for $4800+. Could easily be mistaken for another refinished gun. Letter references the "Special Finish" as "brush nickel finish".

I wonder what the chances are that one of the few out there has the trigger & hammer plated to match the gun after purchase ?
