Have bought and sold a Model 27, 28, 586, and 686; all were pre internal lock. Thinking about purchasing a new 4" 686 this year. Will be a range and home defense gun, shooting mainly .38 and .38 plus p. Any advice or concerns. Thanks.

Why would you sell a model 27/28? <shakes head>
Anyway, if you intend to mostly shoot 38spl, an L-frame is not needed. The whole point of an L-frame is CONSISTENT use of 357mag, otherwise a K-frame is easier to handle and fits the bill better. I don't buy "new", and I certainly don't buy internal lock models, so I won't give any recommended models that are "new" with IL.
