I just got this revolver and can't figure out the date of manufacture. The sn is CBS33xx, is round butt and has grooves on the front and back straps of the grip. I came with Hogue rubbers, are these original to the revolver, and if not, what would be the correct grips?

Ron in MD, great information. In your last picture it says in 1996, for eighteen months, that the front and rear strap were serrated. I would think it puts mine in the same time frame. I have the S&W book, but it, and the other charts seem to dance around the "CBS" serial prefix. Thank you.

The book lacks a lot of the alpha tags, but it's a good bet if you were looking for a year of manufacture on a CBC and the book listed CAZ and CBF for a particular year. Your gun should fall into that line of tags.

I don't know what grips would have come on your gun, but my -5 came with factory laminate combat grips. Mine is a 4" square butt though. If a synthetic grip was listed for your gun gun, it's a good bet it was a Hogue. In the late 90's a lot of round butt guns came with the Hogue finger grooved monogrip.

It is my understanding too, that round butt models came with the Hogue grips.
