Is the 6906 an alloy framed pistol? I've never seen one in person but from what I think I remember the number designation doesn't follow the general rule.

I've gotten myself in a bind and in order to sell a new excavator my customer is forcing me to sell him my 5906 (which I don't want to do but bizness is bizness and I need the commission). So now I'm trying to decide what to replace it with.

...my customer is forcing me to sell him my 5906...
Gees. That's not right!

69 series all have alloy frames. 2nd gen 669 sounds like it should be stainless but isn't. I don't know why they didn't call it a 6903 but the 69 series always seemed to buck there numbering system.

Yes, the 6906, model-number-wise, is an anomaly; it has an alloy frame.

You can't go wrong with a 6906 . . .

Thanks for the replies. I'm having a hard time deciding what to look for. I love the 5906 but I think it'll be a little cumbersome for concealed carry when my permit finally gets processed. Having to let it go to my customer kind of opens up the door to other possibilities.

I love a 6906 for concealed carry, especially in the summer. It will be noticeably lighter than your 5906.

From what I know (as snw_357 indicated) the 6906, for whatever reason, is out of step with the usual Smith nomenclature designation. It is an alloyed framed pistol.

I think it may have something to do with it being the first 'mini-gun'. A 69 is a compact 59. Back then they didn't have all of those other numbers (xx1x) so they just continued with the 69 series.

I did a search on the 6906 and I think that just might be the replacement for my 5906. My only concern is size...my hand size. I'm a big ole boy with big hands. It looks like the 5906 mags with the extended floor plate might do the trick though.

bigcatonhd, not sure where in SC you are located, but if you are near Clayton, GA I will be there this weekend and can let you fondle a S&W #469, which is close to a #6906 in grip size. Holler at me via P.M. if interested.

My first carry gun is a 6946 (DAO, AL frame 12+1). I still have it and is one gun I will never sell with over 5k trouble free rounds down range.
